I just talked to the fellow that found it, he said you can see a radius of a hole right at the break, which doesn't show in the pic. He also said the shank is slightly tapered?
Those pictures are much better. Although slightly oval that doesn't in itself rule out a button but does lean it closer to a Grotesque. However, I'm going to stick with 17th C Button now I've seen these pictures. The break of the shank where the hole was is more aligned to a button than a Grotesque that would have a much longer fixing.
What is now clear to me is the nice reddish patina which matches some of mine, also note one is off-round & the size is a near perfect match;
