We need a side shot so I can see the shank?

There are only 2 possibilities - 17th C (A little unlikely) or 20th C.

I'm sorry, looked on a couple of button charts I have and didn't see a match. Looking elsewhere.nice find.

Cool button!

Welcome to the forums. The first thing that came to my mind was "Man in the Moon" then I thought maybe "Humty-Dumpty". Then I thought what am I doing thinking! It only gives me a headache. I hope your button turns out to be an old one and being found in Maryland it very well could be.

looks like possibly a "Green man" on it - but I would defer to hear Crusader's final opinion

I would lean towards drilled shank, old button? Bramblefind may be on to something too, it is pretty big for a concave button? Leave it up to you and Tim to find something that stumps everyone!

They (concaved) get to nearly 30mm in the 17th C & yes have a drilled shank. I can't tell the size but if its any bigger I think we can discount a button. The face would also be a first for me as most are just floral/punched dots etc..

I just talked to the fellow that found it, he said you can see a radius of a hole right at the break, which doesn't show in the pic. He also said the shank is slightly tapered?

OK, more button like, but what is the diameter?

Modern 20th C stamped buttons would show the design on the backside, and I don’t see any. But I have major doubts it’s a 17th c grotesque either. Without clear photos nobody can really tell anyway.

With no internet access at home, we often need to be rather patient. Specs: side to side diameter 28.5 mm top to bottom 31 mm Height of button from bottom of shank to top of curve 6 mm from broken edge of shank to top curve 7 mm remainder of shank is 2 x 8 mm Hope that helps.
