After reading a post from free to detect.( Dreaming about detecting)
it hit me.
We the detecting community are all too much alike.
once you get the bitten by the bug It never stops itching.
I go to sleep and dream about detecting often even after 4 years.
I look at the forcast often to see when its good enough to go out.
While watching TV I see places I'd like to detect
and when I see a history program I daydream about detecting there.
I love history more in the last four years of detecting than I ever did before.
I feel a sense of loss when I find an old coin and imagine how that effected the person who lost it so many years ago.
I feel glad and sad at the same time.
the time I found my 50 cent 1909 coin it made me think about the person who lost a days wages.
So all my finds are spacial to me.
the passion that we all feel with this hobby is a strong bond shared by few,and I am privileged to be a part of such a group of people.
I have meet some people that don't know me from a hole in their wall Invite me to stay at their place to go and be part of them on their hunt for the lost treasure. Just amazes me. I open all my hunting spots to anyone willing to go on the adventure with me, and love seeing them discover relics from our past. I don't think Dam I wish I got it. I just think its great to see it come out of the ground to be preserved instead of rotting in the ground ( As the Archies Would perfer )
I know many of you feel the same way just by reading the forums and its great.

Thanks Don, but that Barber half, I dropped it on the way back to the car. Can I have it back now?

i guess that would be the ultimate accessory for a detector a time machine. but i guess you wouldn't need the detector cause you would be back when the silver was allready there.

Awesome coin Don! Thanks for the pic!

Re: I like your view...

I too think about the conditions and feeling surrounding that original loss, especially rings and things of a highly personal nature.

Coins too though, at one time a nickel or a dime was "no small change", and to someone that was a BIG loss.

When we run across "ancient" pocket spills 65? to over $1, that had to HURT!

Think about the guys that find the $20 dollar gold pieces, did the previous owner put a pistol in his mouth after that loss? WOW!

Anyway, that's part of the "charge" I get from detecting, creating my own little scenario of how in the heck it got to the point I ever found it.

If it was only about clad and the monetary value of our finds, I'm WAY more than certain I'd have given up long ago, never to return.

Thanks for sharing, we are kindered spirits.

For almost 100 years old that coin really looks good.

Thanks for starting this post. :)

Yes we are connected. It's the thrill of the chase & the victory of the find. It's the sweet smell of success & the absence of the "real world" when we are listening for that faint signal of something once lost but now found. Every find is treasure no matter if it has value or not. We are out there hunting for the history of our past & enjoying the connection of sharing our finds with fellow hunters. We are promoting a good & decient hobby to our kids & grandkids & it is GOOD! Hunt on! Spotz

Great narration Don. And great pic. History seems much more fun now that we don't have to worry about passing those darn essays. Now I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention in HS, but now I realize that I can pass down history to grandkids cause they don't seem to hardly teach as far back as we had to learn.

I have been a member since Dec. 15th and I will say that this topic and the tread is the best I have read here!

Thanks for starting this tread!

Metal Detecting is more then finding treasure it brings peace to my world that seems to be out of control and this hobby is my escape from reality! I forget the pressures of life and really enjoy being alive when I'm detecting because it's not the treasure that makes the day it's the HUNT that brings the PEACE!!!!!!

Onion ?

You're right too Onion. Just think, metal detectors started out to help in war. Now they help in peace and stress relief
