So I like to do a lot of water related hunting, I've had some close calls with getting the command console wet. So naturally I've gone to the web, youtube etc. I've seen some homemade rigs, and folks using aftermarket Ukrainian boxes and see wildly mixed reviews. Prices for these aftermarket products are 60+ bucks , does it even make sense to utilize one (do they work). I'm thinking that just saving up for a waterproof rig would make more sense. Anyone with practical experience in this area, or general opinions/discussions welcome.

Edit: I know it's risky to do stuff not recommended for the line of machine, but the good stuff is always in the water. I would rather find one great artifact with a smidge of risk than not find it and wish I could.

I think you could "water proof" the console with a large heavy duty ziplock bag and some wide electrical tape enough that you could swing in a stream and occasionally drop your detector. I think if you wanted to go full aqua chigging you could do it with a tube of clear silicon sealant (not glue). You would just have to go to town with every possible leak point, battery area, console body, headphone jack, coil connection, and even the button area. I think I have seen this done on the web. Send pics if your rig if you go through with it.

Looks like you are running the DD coil too, nice thanks!
