Nice rig! Always like to see people's DIY ingenuity of what they want in detecting gear. Just polished off a few things on a waterproof Sovereign GT project built last year that needed some tweaking (video below).

Since the GT is my go to detector for old coins at "dead" sites on land I needed it to be quick and painless to remove the control box for easy transition back to a light weight custom land shaft (1.5 pounds lighter than stock). I use the stock shaft as my water rig.

Also wanted some convenience features, such as several ways to configure the Plano box depending on hunting circumstances (tether/float, hip, chest, shoulder, or back shaft extension), but prefer a snap on back shaft extension to eliminate float, drag, or risks of leaks by it being kept high and dry.

Have a Mode swith for things like pin point mounted inside both rig's grips that quickly plugs into the control box and retains full access to all modes rather than just flipping PP on and off. The stock mode switches still work whether it's plugged in or not.

Easy enough to find switches applicable to older Sovereigns or the Excalibur (simple on/off switch to toggle PP on and off) but that wasn't going to work for my needs. Couldn't find a waterproof switch with the proper configuration, so built one.

Next project will be getting another Sovereign control box and stripping out the guts to build a custom sleek waterproof enclosure with external pot and switch controls.

There's a lot of dead air space in a Sovereign control box so I'm estimating it'll be 1/4th the size height wise and roughly a few inches shorter.

Going to mount the external controls on top for easy access, but it will also still have a remote Mode switch inside the grip. That one is going to have another surprise haven't seen done with a waterproof Sovereign yet.

The video just now did going over a few of the features of this current rig can be found on Youtube here...

The next video will show the recorded build steps and cover additional features.

Thanks critterhunter! I really want to see that video when I get home! Place I'm in right now, most-times, blocks YouTube stuff on their server so I'll check it out in a few days!

Maybe you and OBN need to collaborate on a project and build the best H2O proof water/land detector with easily swappable coils that everyone can afford! Oh, and make it collapsible, portable and with the guarantee of finding at least one piece of gold per hunt! LOL Think of the sales!

DocBeav/critterhunter,

Where do I send me GT for THAT modification!!! Those are both super COOL!!!

Anybody know if this waterproof box setup is possible with an X-Terra 705?
No, but I was thinking how easy the Xterras would be to waterproof since they are so compact. IMO they would make an amazing freshwater setup.

There is a great mod done by a guy on another site I visit. He made a real beautiful waterproof explorer. He did a real nice video on it also.

Has anyone ever done a waterproof on a CZ3D? I was thinking that it would be a great project for me this winter coming. I really like the way you used a plano box. Was thinking of gutting my old XL 500 and using the waterproof housing.

Please remember we do not allow links to other treasure forums..

If you to send it via pm that is not an issue...

...lol "minimal cursing and not talking to self in garage". I just laughed my a$$ off. I had a GT waterproofed too. Right in same box. That box kept my gt like new for the two years I owned it. Hope yours works out. I did not have any problems at all. I used same cable clams as you and everything. Although...I think I lost it a few times rofl. rofl. Thanks for sharing mod for those that want to do it. Its cheap and easy. hh an gl. -Joe

The machine has been doing GREAT! I still have not gone out too deep with it yet and completely submerged it yet but it has withstood rain and a few wave smacks with no issues! Even the non-waterproof earbuds I put on it have stood up will till I get some proper, waterproof ear buds for it. Really happy with how it is working and being able to use this on the beach and in the water has really paid off in the last few hunts (see recent posts) and the GT has been hitting some nice deep tgts that I fear would have been missed by my 2 excals (8" and 10") but we will see how they are after both getting new coils (both falsing and reduced sensitivity) and some TLC up with OBN. Hope to hear back soon on how the field test went before they come back home.

Have to say though, this GT hs been hitting real nice and it is pretty comfortable strapping it to the small camel back pack and heading out! Easy mod to do and not that expensive. ($50 tops depending on where you get your equipment). I'm no expert handyman but I was able to do this in less than an hour with minimal cursing and talking to myself out in the garage!

Thanks joeb1999, it has been great but it has been some time since I used it. I've been spending most of my time the last 3 months or so learning the inns and outs of my CTX but I was just looking at all the parts and pieces of the project in the garage (took it apart and rigged it with a TDI meter for for land) and was thinking I needed to put it all back in the box, and have it ready to go as a back up (both excals are having some issues) or just get out and have some fun with it on the beach and in the water for a while. The SOV was my first "good" detector and I'll never let her go. Such a good machine!
