Along these same lines, I tried to talk to someone recently that holds my college loans. After being placed on hold for 35 minutes, and told "this conversation is being recorded" I couldn't understand the person trying to talk to me. I asked to speak with someone who spoke English.... She became real angry with me, I said I can't understand you are you taping this conversation? Yes, good then I am too, oh but you can't do that, oh yes I can as long as both parties know and agree....... Click.... She hung up.... The reason I was on hold for so long? My call had to be routed thru their call center in India

That's the thing TH..........people getting back much more than they put into stuff. Kinda like a Ponzi scheme. Eventually someone will lose. Ask the union workers in Detroit how it works. It's the same thing that's happening to Social Security. With what they pay out, along with the massive abuse to that system, it's fate is sealed unless changes are made. I too am reaping benefits from government retirement, SS and a small check from the VA every month. I feel I've earned a lot of it but, the longer I live, the more I will reap until I'm getting more than I contributed. If these monies weren't invested wisely all of these systems will eventually fail. jmho
Invested wisely...LOL. That'll be the day. The government spent that money, like all the money it receives, and the money it prints, as fast as it comes in.

It's the people that are not qualified to get assistance and those that sell their assistance for cash....that's who we should go after. Put them in jail; they're thieves. Sure times are tough but dump the freeloaders when you can identify them. Problem is, if you take foodstamps from some druggie baby momma her litter of kids will go without. It's the ol' catch 22, we can't punish the "parents" because of the risk of hurting the kids. That's why our hands are tied. It's a form of blackmail that they use all the time. They use kids to avoid getting utilities turned off, getting kicked out of their housing and on and on.

We can make them earn it, community service for welfare. 40 hours a week picking up trash pulling weeds, cutting grass, spreading mulch. I bet a lot would get out and find a job doing something vs working in the sun and hear or cold and snow....

When I was a medical caseworker, I had patients in real need, that were not getting food stamps, because they had not turned in their life-insurance policies, car valuations, or minute info, that in some cases thay HAD turned in and the paperwork was never adknowledged as having been received.
There USED to be monetary guidelines, that if you "owned" a certain amount of assets, you're vehicle was valued over a certain amount, or even if your life insurance policy had too high a cash value, you did not get food stamps.

Just what are the guidelines for a family of 2, nowadays? Anyone know?

don't know but for a family of 3 in Florida it has to be under 130% of the poverty line or 23,800 a year. Or the household income may fall below the poverty line after deductions for housing/utilities, childcare and other necessary household expenses. Phone and car payment are not considered necessary expenses. You are allowed to own 2000.00 of personal assets unless you have someone elderly or disabled in you household, at that time the assets can increase to $3000.00.

Wow, that's a lot of money.

A better way to look at it is each month you will get enough for each person in your household to eat $4.50 worth of food each day or $135.00 per month for each person to be able to eat 3 meals every day. Florida allows a whopping $540.00 for that family. Many of those families work at a certain box store that pays just enough to allow that employee to collect EBT which is a subsidy furnished by we tax paying citizens while the owners of that box store (there are 5) have a cash value of over $25 Billion dollars each.

there are representatives and senators that are taking what is called the "food stamp challenge" as I type this. You can google to find who they are. The most salient point they make so far is to say how hungry they are, all the time and that they think about food constantly.

Kind of makes you wonder...

How does one get out from under such a scenario, even if one wanted to?

Almost sounds like it is designed to keep people in poverty. Just food for thought.

in anthropology JB..it is called "the cycle of poverty"
yes, when the haters scream social programing and design...it is to avoid focus upon their development programs and designs.

$23000 a year is $ 11.05 an hour. Why work for $13 hour as unskilled labor when they can stay home sit on their lazy butt, watch TV and make $11.05 and no taxes...

That is why they should be forced to do 40 hours of community service a week if they are being paid.

uhh, that would be $23,800.00 for a family of three, not a family of one. Would you like to try living on that with a wife and child? Deduct rent, utilities, insurance, gas, food, child care and any other unexpected thing that may pop up. Oh, and take taxes out of that while your at it

Now, to address the community service plan. If we, the taxpayers, were to hire people to clean the roads, parks, aquaducts, street lights etc, they would have to get paid, and they would have to be insured also. Are you willing to pay more in taxes to provide those benefits (wages and insurance)?

I was under the impression the tea party advocated privatization of all those thing, including prisons for profit, and they would be paid for with user fees instead of taxes.

Davest I'm almost 65, I know exactly what is involved in raising a family, I have been doing it for 35 years, put 2 kids through college.

They are unskilled labor, just what do you propose you pay unskilled labor?

They are not insured, they are doing community service, in return for compensation of welfare, they are not employed.

Sorry if my feeling people should earn what they are given offends you, it offends me when liberals say we are obligated to subsidize the lazy.....

This really is the problem, isn't it? Americans that do not understand human nature and lecturing everyone how to be compassionate? Anyone hear how FDR got his but handed to him by Stalin after WWII? Fdr fell into it because he did not understand people, our current government hopefully has the same problem(instead of the Stalin camp). They just think humans are inherently righteous and even in the face of terrible atrocities they feel that the bad guys can be talked to, made to "see the light " as it were.
How do you educate people that will not see? Can't make them go to some cesspool of a country for 4 years, that's not that compassionate either. I wish there was a way to get through to them. They are happy railing against everyone that really does understand basic human nature by screaming how un-nice they are.

What do you call it when someone proclaims that people should be "forced" to do something? For someone who stands for freedom (TH), this isnt a very free thing to say now is it?

OK I know this is weird me saying this, but T_H I think meant that those taking Gov aid (if physically able) should be 'required' to do work in exchange. I agree, no one should be paid to just stay home and wait.

Fair enough.

I dont have time tonight, but tomorrow I will look up what percentage of entitlement spending is spent on welfare and food stamps in the annual budget.

Then, I will look up how much of our annual budget is spent on things like defense.

I think it has been stated here in the past that it is pretty small in comparison.
