It's been a long time since I've posted in today's finds I'm usually down in the glass forum but this qualifies . So today I grabbed the old etrac and headed to the woods to a site that I thought was hunted out I. I was wrong. I dug a plug and silver caught my eye and I got excited because saw the tails side of a seated quarter but when I flipped it over it was engraved with he word excelsior which is odd. I don't think it's a love token and I wonder if it has to do with the New York militia. All in all it's my best find so far this year that's not glass. Thanks for looking- justin

Great find. Looks like it was made into a brooch. Finding a seated quarter is great, but pieces like this are extremely interesting.

Thats why I'm thinking of a New York militia connection. I found it in northwest ct.

That's a love token buddy, and worth some coin. Collectors are snatching them up right now and coin dealers have been buying and hoarding them for a few years already as most people didn't know what they had. Go to someone reputable if your planning on selling.

Your quarter has to be an 1853 as it has the rays on the reverse............Nice find!

While it seems to fit the bill for a love token, I wonder if it does have a NY Militia link due to the name carved in it. Perhaps a secret love token from a guy in NY so the girls dad didn't know who gave it to her as he went off to war.

Excellent recovery. Congratulations.

It's deffinantly a lot cooler then a plain seated quarter. And I'm thinking about about having it turned back into pin.

Yes, it's a love token and a truly "one of a kind" find. I would be ecstatic!

Congratulations!
