Hello

I recently found this button in my back garden in Wallkern (a village in Hertfordshire, England) and on searching the net for an ID, came across this post on your forum from 7 years ago:

I'm looking for a history buff that knows an early colonial connection with King Ludwig to the American revolution. I found this button with the latin phrase "Ludovicus Rex Plures Non Capit Orbis" and the probable latin translation is "King Ludwig, No greater world leader" Was there a Bavarian or German military leader or unit that would have worn this button on their uniform? This button was found in Bucks County, Pa. Thanks to all who can help

I have not been able to successfully ID this button yet and I wondered whether the original author of this might still be posting on this forum as I would be interested to find out if they managed to get a positive ID.

I know its a long shot but you never know!

Regards

Nelson

Nice button, they're always a welcome find in my book,

I don't believe it would have been a Bavarian/German military leader or unit that dropped it in Bucks County PA as they've never invaded us here in the USA,

Might it be Spanish? They traded with England, as well as had their presence here in America, and It looks 18th century to me which would date it to a time they were in both countries.

anyway, good luck on your search, I've never seen one like it and I can tell it's a LOT older than most people find!

Hello Lonewolfe

I must have found nearly 200 buttons now in just 3 years detecting. Most of them date between 17-19th Century but I also have a few medieval ones made of lead! They are quite a frequent find over my way as you can tell and you can usually be guarenteed to find atleast 2 or 3 per outing.

This example I think could well be Spanish or possibly French even, athough I still cannot seem to find out who this King Ludovicus was!

I think your date of 18th century is right.

Thanks for your response.

We're not so lucky here in the states to find buttons on a regular basis (especially any of age). We're happy/lucky to get civil war era buttons, with an occasional earlier date here and there. There's just no comparison in the age of our countries. England has history dating back to mid evil times and or before with millions and millions of people, while we have a history dating back to basically the late 1600s (brief/scarcely before) when French and Spanish traders/etc. 1st arrived, and the majority of history being only in the last 200 yrs or so with no where near the masses of people.

I believe you could be right when thinking it may be French. It would make sense that they would be found in both countries. Just the same as Spanish.

If that's the case though, and it is French, the button may be older than 1st thought (possibly 17th century).

I've been looking through info on the web, but can't seem to find much,

I'll let you know if I do find anything though,

keep us posted,

HH
