I found this .45/70 carbine round at a Fort site this year. It is a later issue since it has an external primer. I could see that down inside of it there was a lead bullet. So today I carefully cut it open and was surprised to find two round balls inside. Was this a normal issue round for the .45/70 or do you think it was made in the field? The primer has never been struck.

I found a few things about the multi-ball loads. They were loaded with three .457 balls for prison guards, and were used by the army for hunting loads. One article said they were loaded by the armory, so there isn't any factory load info. Pretty cool.

edit: trap door loading version only. Wouldn't work in a tube feed.

Thanks for the help. I've found hundreds of .45/70 cartridges, but this is a first for me.
