Tesoro silver umax
So I got my dad into the joys of metal detecting. He found this on day two in a yard of an old house in northern missouri. It's 1 1/4" in diameter and 1/10" thick. He says it's heavy for it's size. Suspects its lead or silver. Doubtful it's silver with the corrosion? Above the face there's writing he can't make out. I think this find should get him officially hooked on yard fishing! Thanks in advance.

Kinda looks like William Tecumseh Sherman to me...although I haven't spotted a medal yet. Here is one listed as a "dog tag" of Major general McClellan

YES! Getting close or it - looks a little off but I think Sherman is the way - found this one:

YOU GO GIRL!! Excellent ID Bramble! Green check. (next; LOL) Breezie

PS: Since it is silver plated 'tin,' I guess we should have asked the proverbial question: Does it attract a magnet.

So, Sherman, a General of the Union, had an Army of Georgia?
I have to wonder because Georgia was confederate.

Perhaps the meaning of the relic is to commemorate the "Army that ravaged Georgia...." :icon_scratch:

History

During Sherman's Atlanta Campaign in 1864, his Army Group was composed of the Army of the Tennessee, the Army of the Cumberland, and the Army of the Ohio. After the fall of Atlanta in September, Sherman sent the Army of the Ohio and the IV Corps of the Army of the Cumberland north to deal with the remnants of Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee. Then, in November, he created the Army of Georgia, by combining the remaining XIV Corps of the Army of the Cumberland along with the XX Corps. This new army, placed under the command of Maj. Gen. Henry Warner Slocum of the XX Corps, served as one of the two wings in Sherman's March to the Sea. The Army of the Tennessee, consisting of the XV and XVII Corps, commanded by Oliver O. Howard, served as the other wing. The Army of Georgia was involved in little fighting during the March to the Sea but was engaged in the Battle of Averasborough and bore the brunt of fighting at the Battle of Bentonville.

Tector,
I am really keen on Civil War history, especially the Lincoln assassination; I've read the four volume set of Carl Sandberg's "Abraham Lincoln: The War Years," and still have the 1939 printing of the set in addition to several other volumes of the era including a large tome of Matthew Brady Photos. I'd have to search through some boxes to find it, though... :-\
I'm impressed with your "off the thumb" knowledge.
I'll have to find and look over my reference material and endeavor to learn more of the subject. :read2:

Best Wishes,
Scott

PS. Once again, Welcome!

For the record, Missouri did not secede from the Union during the Civil War, and fielded a fair number of regiments of Federal troops whom were Missouri born and bred. There were many southern sympathizers, but Missouri was technically a Union state, as was Kentucky and Maryland.

I think I can see "W A R D" on the name where "Sherman" is being perceived by others, and there were Union generals named Ward but no CS as far as I know. A very cool find, congrats!

True. I also recently found out that not all counties in Georgia seceded, Rabun being one.
But the state, as a whole, did.
Don't cha just love history!
