Wanting to start hobby

white's coin master 179.99 all the other are from first Texas instruments except minelab there cheapest is 399.00
and don't let any one tell you different
even tesoro worked for bounty hunter which is a first Texas instrument in 1975

I'd would Look at the Fisher F2 and Garrett 150, 250 as a good place to start. All are well respected and right at $200.

Don't pass up the opportunity to look for fellow MD'ers in your area Aus3. One of them might have a spare that they would let go cheap.

i have been doing a lot of research and the one that stands out the most is the garret ace 250, everyone says its very good for beginners and i haven't read any bad reviews about it. Also i don't actually know of anyone around here that md's.

Well I'm one who had an Ace 250 and hated it. I didn't find it wildly accurate. The cursor tended to bounce all over the place when an item didn't fit nicely into the predefined notches. Along with that the tones bounced all over the place at the same time. I could have lived with the cursor bouncing all over the place, but the tones bouncing around was very distracting. Battery life is okay, but not great. I'd get about two weeks out of four AA's.

I've got a White's Coinmaster that I use about 15% of the time. It goes deep and with the single tone is not distracting to my ears. Though it has fewer notches than the 250, the cursor doesn't bounce around as much, mainly it will go between two notches if the object doesn't fit one perfectly. It doesn't pinpoint as tightly as I prefer, but this is something I've noticed with every White's machine I've owned. Battery life about 3 weeks for 2 9-V batteries.

While I don't/have not owned a Tesoro Compadre, I'd suggest you give it a close look. It's simple to operate, you'll learn to depend upon your ears and not a display to tell you if you should dig a target, and it has incredible battery life. I easily get a month on one 9-V battery in my Sidewinder. During detecting season I often hunt 14+ hours a week.
