Virginia Button One Piece VA Albert's 2a Hometown VA Unit ;-)

I went out for about an hour to a spot I have hunted a couple of times.. dug 30 or so bullets there before.. and a nice mix of them too. Well, I was there about 20 minutes when I dug the my first Virginia button in about 10 years!! AND... it is a nice one piece early one.. per Alberts it is a VA 2a.. shank intact and a good backmark " Young Smith & Co New York" I have a few picture of it out of the ground and I am soaking it now..
The other items are a pair of large silver cuff links, I think, all dug in about one foot square at about 8 " or so...

Thanks for looking...

**UPDATE** I went back out, big surprise!!, with really low discrimination and found the remains of the chain to the two silver ovals.. it is a cape pin.. so a Virginia Button and a Cape Pin in pretty much the same hole.. can't beat that!!! I added on more pic with the sections of chain. I also got permission for thr property next door.. since I was digging a nice varity of bullets right up to the fence line.. 3 ringers.. Gardners.. Sharps.. .41 pistols and a few others.. hope to get a few more.. all said and done over 50 bullets.. 4 or 5 Eagle buttons.. the VA and cape pine, 2 coppers and a bunch of early buttons have come out of this spot... not bad

Yep.. That's a good one!!

Thanks!! Only my 4th in 19 years of digging in Northern Virginia!! I have been out and had other people dig 3 of them right next to me!!!! So I was pretty happy having that one pop out...

I have seen only One Virginia button come out during my first decade of MDing when I lived there.

That is a GREAT find.

That is a very nice example of the early one piece Virginia.

Is it possible that your silver items are cape pins?

You were dead on with the cape pin.. I wen back out with really low discrimination and found the chain,,, pretty cool.. VA Button and cape pin in pretty much the same hole!!!

Re: Virginia Button One Piece VA 2a

I double checked in Tice's book last night and this is a pre 1830s button... if I read it right... that makes it a lot earlier then I thought... given the area I was looking for was a 1861 engagement.. but I suppose that still works....

Re: Virginia Button One Piece VA 2a

Man I give you five stars for that find. Just super. :icon_king:

Re: Virginia Button One Piece VA 2a

I wanted to add a little history to this post.. why I was so excited to find this button. My town is pretty small, around 104 people now.. maybe 160 in the 1860s.. and had formed a small defense unit.. the Hillsboro Border Guards. I had done research on them years ago and read where they had one engagement with a scouting party of the Union Army before being called up into the regular Confederate Army. The description of the engagements, small as it was.. one killed two captured before the Union fled.. was the only action they saw as a unit.. the source I read gave enough vague clues as to where the action took place.. but that area had been occupied by the 2nd Corp as part of a huge camp later in the war.. so I gave up ever finding it.. figuring if any relices existed form it.. they were found by the many people who had hunted it over the years.. I received permission for the property above the camp last year.. this extends up the mountain and I figured it was prime for a picket post.. I did dig 75 + bullets, all drops out of there last year. The total size is about 20 to 25 acres so I have been hunting all of it as time permits.. I found the VA button and cape pin in an area away form the rest of the relics along what had been a fence row.. close to a historic house ruins that had been referenced in my source.. soo all of the information came together.. the timing.. the location.. and the area.. enough to prove it was part of that engagement... soo.. to find a relic from my hometown unit.. a total of 30 men or so.. that only existed for a very short period as an independent unit really adds to the find for me... I'm trying to track down a picture that I heard exist of them from after the war... I'll post it if I can find a copy..

..and now you know.. the rest of the story..
