Some times you find something, that simply makes you stop and wonder. This find certainly did that. It's the pommel from a Viking sword. Wonder what happened to the viking warrior who owned it. I would guess it was probably buried with him, in the soil of Yorkshire, sometime around the 10th century. Did he die in battle with the Saxons, or from some other cause. The answer is, there's no way of knowing. The pommel looks a little sad now, you can still see though faint silver wire decoration. When new the sword would have been an object of great beauty. If you were unfortunate enough to find yourself on the wrong end, deadly. The other key like find, came from a few feet away. It could be part of the burial, or un connected. Robert.

I have probably watched too many Viking movies but,, I thought they were placed in a wooden cradle of logs and branches and set ablaze??
Congrats on a Nice find

I think most where simply buried. More practical, and quicker i would guess. Perhaps high ranking vikings, did go up in flames, it would have been more dramatic.

Thats quite a find Rob! Congrats, very nice!
Hello Westfront, had a full one a few years ago. Also a nice hilt decoration, now in a local museum. The area is turning up Viking material, it's where I got my avatar from.

Good ID. I would never have recognized it for a sword pommel. Since you found a complete one previously, I guess you were able to recognize this partial one straight away.

Hello Steve, looking at this one, it's a composite type ( two sides ). This is one side, the one I found before was a one piece type. The North of England where i lived was under Viking control around the time of the pommel , this was called the Dane Law.

Cool find Rob, I would never had guessed what it was but then again I haven't found my Viking booty yet. Well done !!

Cool enough. I hope you can find something else Viking. I expect you did go over that area pretty good though.

That is a super rare find & very collectable!

That to me is a BANNER find Rob!!!! Part of a Viking sword!!!! Not sure how this can possibly not be one of the rarest things we will ever see on here. Am I just a foolish lunatic? Don't answer that but I will be voting for this rare relic

Beautiful find Rob. I often wonder the same things with my finds. Congrats

I would make a small museum in my house if I had stuff like this to put on display :notworthy:

In awe with every one else. Nice going Rob.

Incredible piece!

Cheers Ahab8, pommels do turn up a bit all over England. The high status gold ones, are really something to see (sadly never found one). This one probably belonged to an average Viking warrior. Would be very interesting to know is story. He probably came from Denmark, and ended up buried in a field in Yorkshire. What happened in between.
