Viking Raven Strap End

I found this strap end a couple of weeks before Christmas. At first I thought it was meant to represent a fish (it looks a lot like a pike). It is actually a Viking raven strap end 10th Century. The raven is shown with wings folded, it is meant to show one of the ravens owned by the Viking god Odin, I think they were is eyes and ears.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a 'strap end?'

They went on the bottoms of leather straps, for decoration, and were sometimes made from Silver. They are highley prized find in the UK, and to find a Viking one is a spectacular find indeed

Yes as Colin says they were put on the end of leather straps as decoration. Like we do now with belts.

There is so little known yet about Viking history archeologist are just now understanding it since the Viking,s where such nomads and never really settled down for any long period of time how does anyone determine whether its Viking or not ? iam no expert on Viking history just the little i have read ,that's a amazing find i would give anything to get over there a search for things like that it must be my English blood i was born in Cornwall the Cornish Coast Good Hunting Jim

In my country they were living permanently, mostly as farmers, for about 300 years !!

Actually i read it in a issue of National Geographic about 2 Viking villages found in coastal South Eastern Canada and Northern most coastal Maine both accidental finds by archeologist i believe it was back in 1995 along with the remains of one of there long ships very interesting to read Jim
