I found this strap end a couple of weeks before Christmas. At first I thought it was meant to represent a fish (it looks a lot like a pike). It is actually a Viking raven strap end 10th Century. The raven is shown with wings folded, it is meant to show one of the ravens owned by the Viking god Odin, I think they were is eyes and ears.

Regards
Robert.

WOWZERS..
We can only dream of finds like this on THIS side of the pond..

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a 'strap end?'
:icon_scratch:
They went on the bottoms of leather straps, for decoration, and were sometimes made from Silver. They are highley prized find in the UK, and to find a Viking one is a spectacular find indeed :o

Yes as Colin says they were put on the end of leather straps as decoration. Like we do now with belts.

Actually i read it in a issue of National Geographic about 2 Viking villages found in coastal South Eastern Canada and Northern most coastal Maine both accidental finds by archeologist i believe it was back in 1995 along with the remains of one of there long ships very interesting to read Jim

Oh, now I understand, you talk about those who came to America !! :icon_thumleft:

Then your info might be right, but not as a general description of the Vikings in Scandinavia.

Isn´t it strange: In our World that is so fixated on knowledge and correctness, we still teach our kids in school that Columbus was the first European in America, when science knows that the Vikings were the first Europeans in America ??

:read2: :coffee2:

That is true my sister went to Northern Cornwall a few years ago to trace out family history its seems it goes back to the Celts .
Cornwall is recognized as one of the "Celtic nations" by many Cornish people, residents and organizations.
