Went out yesterday with @spaced45 and had a very good day.

Owner that lives in house was someone i have known for years and he allowed us to go on property. The house is right downtown Bishopville and was built in 1910

Will post more pictures of finds soon as i did not have time to get them yesterday. They included the following

15-20 memorial pennies
5-10 wheaties varying from 1916-1944
Lee county dog tag dated 1925
A Citadel hat clip
1945 Liberty Dime
Bullet marked "US"

AND!!!!! the best find i have found yet!!
A 1827 Capped Bust Dime! YEAH :D

I did have a question on the dime if someone could help. Below are pictures and my book mentions 2 varieties. a Flat Top 1 and Pointed Top 1. Was I lucky enough to find the Pointed top that is potentially worth $600? (No its not in its condition) By reading the grading in my book i put it at Fine to Very Fine. Opinions?

The is a great place to hunt. We need to find more places like this one. Old home right downtown. We pulled only about 20% trash and that is a BIG change for us. I love new sites :)

Here are the high res links to the capped bust dime

Yep, it is the "Pointed 1" Variety" and will probably only net a "Good" grading due to damage, environmental damage and cleaning but a very nice find no less! Congrats and keep up the great finds!

Just saw your post and i did see that there were a bit cheaper.

Don't plan on selling it anyways so no big deal :D

Thanks for all the feedback.

Bignadad, very nice find on the old dime. You gotta be thrilled to find something that old. Congrats.

Is the capped bust dime worth getting graded even if i plan on not selling? Just to know?

If so how do i go about that?

No! The coin is only worth approximately $40 to a collector but priceless to the finder! To have damaged and cleaned coins certified, graded and placed in a holder (slabbed), one would have to submit the coin or coins to ANACS or a lesser Third Party Grading Service. PCGS of which you have to have a member subscription or submit through an authorized PCGS Coin Dealer (Member), will not grade damage coins but they will holder them and certify them as authentic. Not sure what NGC's rules on coins are, so you would have to check with them and I believe that you have to be a subscribed member or an authorized NGC Coin Dealer (Member) with them as well to submit coins.

Good luck!

huntsman53 Why do you refer to the coin as damaged and cleaned?

I have done nothing to the coin but pull it out of the ground and take a picture of it.

Environmental damage i can understand.

bigbadad,

First off, there is a fairly deep gouge on the Reverse (back) of the coin under and below the Eagle's right wing (the wing on the left when viewing the coin). Second, there are lots of thin scratches and lighter spots on the Obverse (front) and fewer on the Reverse that would indicate a cleaning. And third, the pitting and porous surfaces of both the Obverse and Reverse are from environmental damage due to being in the ground so long and whatever contaminates that were in the soil. Any and all of these are factors that would prevent PCGS from giving a grade to the coin!

Frank

P.S. One foot note! While having the coin certified as authentic, placed in a holder and possibly garnering a grade as to it's condition, might be something you would want to do to protect it and be proud of, the cost of doing so is really prohibitive in the case of this coin.
