It does look like a thumb nail! I'm thinking limestone - looks kind of limey - also looks it may have been formed by precipitation from another mineral source - meaning maybe its a secondary mineral.

To me it looks like a fossilized barnacle. Are there any deposits of fossil marine life in your area? We find these all the time in areas of California where there was a shallow inland sea with old reefs.

No fossil marine life that I know about. I do not think anyone has ever dug any where around here. There was a dinosaur they discovered about 18 miles from my house. Closer as the crow flies.

Looks like an eroded piece of a "Desert Rose" - a form of gypsum.
