Found this huge axe head at a very early site. Was very deep unlike fur trade axes I discovered there (could be because of it's weight). Never seen this type of design before, looks and feels very old. Any ideas on its type and age?

Thanks.

While there is a more specific name for it's design, it's generally referred to as a 'broad axe'.

I remember a similar post and link on the shapes and origins of axe heads and similar utilitarian tools from early North American blacksmiths

I've found pieces of broken ones around some of our earliest sites and have only seen a few complete from the ground of all the sizes
I've only seen one other the size of yours, I believe it was dug in NB

I'm curious to see if there's a makers mark on it. The age is still not clear to me.

of I had to put a date to one like yours, 1770s-1850s
I would think that the shape hasn't varied a whole lot until foundry produced axes were available widely

and, they would have been a staple of just about every household and hung around for generations in some cases
not all would have had touch marks but you might get lucky with yours
