or if you dont want to completely ruin it you could follow his professional opinion and do electrolysis

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

do electrolysis......it may be really old.....even if it turns out to be be junk you'll have fun on the discovery part.

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

Hmm....I'm pretty sure I saw something like that in a Mobile gas station off the highway near me the other day.

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

By size reference, I meant how big is it? It is really strange looking to say the least. Looks Alien almost. :laughing7: :laughing7:
Also, I agree with "3D" below. Do you have an old ac/dc converter laying around? You can make an electrloysis unit for literally nothing if you do. Here 's how to make one-http://tinyurl.com/3hs68tr

Exactly!

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

If you lived in Massachusetts, I would say "put it back, NOW." But since you live in VA and there aren't so many witches there, not so much. I say expose it.

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

Could be copper wires and what is left of a wire nut after a fire.

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

so rig something up and melt this thing

Whatever dude. ::) At this point you can put it in your pipe and smoke it for all I care. In my opinion, electrolysis is the only possible way to even remotely try to identify that thing you posted a big azz photo of.
You know something else? And I apologize in advance if my perceptions are incorrect, maybe i'm just "reading" you wrong, but you come off with a pretty smug attitude for someone who comes on here asking for help identifying a heavily corroded blob of god knows what, with only one single photo and nothing to indicate the size of it, nor the context in which it was found.
Next time you want something id'd, you won't get any advice from me pal. grenade.gif

DANGIT! I was going to make the observation that it looks quite a bit like good bud, coated with opium. You beat me to it.
However, I agree; if you can't smoke it, electrolyze it. It really IS easy and you probably won't electrocute or poison yourself with an orphan battery charger and a little baking soda and water.

This is the weirdest thing, it kind of reminds me of a bird or something...

A bird.
Yes. It looks like a bird.

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

Looks like a wad of coated copper wire that's seen some heat.

Yes but more like old school friction tape

;D My bad, i'm glad you weren't trying to be a smart a** :laughing7: :laughing7: Please accept my apology. Let us see a photo after you try cleaning it. Good luck and keep an eye on it that you don't fry it. I fried some coins once by leaving them in too long, when I made and tried out my first electrolysis set up.

Re: Very Odd Copper Object 14'' Down!!

My machine is ALIVE!!!!

ive had the blob of copper in it for about an hour or so ... had to change the water 5 times......

edit-... 500 Ma adapter from a printer
