In a foul weather dig. Rain / freezing rain, no matter if the finds are coming.

I got close to a record number of copper 11, 2 are farthing size, and 9 buttons.

Left out the dirty pics, because so many to show this time.
Got first ever numbered military button, it was silvered, and I couldn't find a match to it, (12mm)

2 of the coppers have counterstamps, well one is guaranteed for sure, the other I think is.

I don't know what to make of this one, maybe a conder token ? maybe a company name on it, I can see a "&" on it. Castle one side, a skeleton key the other.

And best condition one has readable date.

A great day in mud.
Anyone got anything on the "conder", button, or that CM please speak up.

I think it could easily be from 1827 when they returned to Canada. I assume the back is too corroded to see a makers mark?

66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot Soldiers' documents
Formed in 1758 and became the Berkshire Regiment in 1782. At the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War the regiment was in Nova Scotia, whence it removed in 1798 to Newfoundland, and there remained until the Peace of Amiens, when it came home. In 1827 it proceeded to Canada, and stayed there fourteen years, during which it was actively employed in Lower Canada during the rebellion in 1838-9. From 1845 to 1848 it was stationed at Gibraltar, and from 1848 to 1851 in Barbados. It was in North America during the Crimean War.

Thanks again.
Back side not bad, has casting line, and 6 small stars. Does that help ?

Nope, doesn't really help. Just says it could fit either timeline and you'll need to do a little leg work to decide which. Either find a match to date it, or see if they were right in your area, or what I hope is the easy one.... it's in my book! :) I'll have a look and see.

66th officer buttons were silvered until 1830, first being flat types, and then going to convex. Your button would be the early type, but could easily be still in use in 1827 because it makes a lot more sense to think each issue crossed over and was used at the same time, than making a switch from one to the other. So to get the answer, or at least to make the best call on it, you'd have to do the research. Even then there might not be enough, and it's always going to be a guess anyway... unless you can put a 66th officer at or very close to your site.

Well if it's always going to be a guess anyway, I'm satisfied with the range of 1830 or earlier.
As an officers button, and my first even numbered military I'm happy anyway. Will try to see what I can find out though.
What will make more happy is to find more of them !

Man Rick, that was a sweet hunt even if the only silver was on your button! I love those crazy coppers you dig up there with buildings, castles, keys, ships, etc on them. Nice to find a couple coppers with counter stamps too. Yes, I would have braved the elements for those kinds of finds!

You've really been on a hot streak Rick. Hope you're saving some for Dave ..... LOL! That's a boatload of coppers, and that button is awesome too. Keep up the good work.

Rick I think the only way to nail down a date line now is to date it with the other finds. The oldest was my half reale but I think most of the coppers were around from the second quarter of the 19th cent.(i think)
Still it's a really cool find and I do declare find of the day. We will have to do again tomorrow:thumbsup:.

Wasn't sure how to respond to your finds and then it came to me..........WOW!!!!!!!! Need to adopt a son : )

Thats a great day! Well done!

Exceptional smorgasbord of coppers. :icon_thumright: The countersinks are way cool. Glad you were rewarded for your persistence despite the less than ideal digging conditions.

Very odd to get two countermarked George coppers on the same hunt. Yeah, that's no doubt a condor token.

You're killing it!

!

Man with all the gorgeous buttons you have found, not to mention the Super awesome counterstamped plug you have found, when you say "killing it" It has merrit...big time. Thanks my friend.

Fantastic hunt, love the military...hope you hit that area again and again...sure there's lots more to find...

You have some awesome stuff, and in time you'll no doubt make a few of the bigger scores too. Our sites are no better here, (obviously) we've just hunted a lot and good things happened. Enjoy it because you are in the zone, but as time goes on it gets more difficult to find those great early sites.

THANKS Steve, Variety the spice of life, and the colonial collector (me) I do feel lucky to live here. Along with the English, Spanish, French (rare) coins that turn up, I also get a few US coins, British Guiana (stivers), Brasil, and mexico. That not mention the plethoria of "local colonial tokens" regal, non regal, and private there is a real variety there.

I'm Happy to have gotten a couple of different ones lately. The RH token (with ship) I know you have seen, and a Magdalen Island Token, both very large coppers, and both quite scarce...I don't like the word rare...as it is much over used.

Good Luck...and Get out there.

THANKS Anne, The counter stamps are quite special. The weather has little, or nothing to do with it. I'll, or we'll be back out there tomorrow.

ThANKS P., hitting that spot again is a no-brainer, honestly just not now, after the plow...OH YEAH ! In the mean time, lots of good ideas, tomorrow just "may" be one, if not we'll try #2, should be a post in there in any case.

Thanks.

Oh Yeah, you are right (as you most always are, and thanks for past IDs) Your sites might be more "buton rich ? I certainly do know that the stuff don't grow back as was recently mentioned, and yes I do hope / expect to make the "big score" someday.

Thanks, sincerely.
