so i couldnt wait any longer and took new detector out today.i set the mode to coin and jewelry, set the disgrim to recommended set point and set the ground to recommended point also.now we dug about ten targets .on some of the targets the tone was loud and the vdi#s jumpy. i notched out iron and pull tabs and we still dug foil and nails?one target got a non jumpy signal and kept reading 25 cents and we dug and it was a iron loop?i got back to the car and we dug a hole tossed a dime in and covered it back up. i switched between coin and relic mode and vdis went into the 80s and in coin mode it said quarter.though the discrim notched out iron and foil thats all we dug?my son said dad you shouldve got the garret.lol .....

I didn't see you mention ground balancing. My first MD is the MXT,(still got it) it's a rock solid MD.with a very fast recovery between targets. I would go to White's web site or Youtube an watch the MXT instruction videos, that will fill in a lot of the info gaps.
The thing I was told when I first started was dig every thing the first 10 hours to learn what target gives what signal. I would also go to the White's forum, lots of help there. White's engineers and techs post there too. Don't give up, it's a great MD.

Have you had more time with your machine yet Bull?

I took mine out again yesterday and kind of got a couple of clues....

One thing I noticed is when it changes the displays guess at whats in the ground several times. It is most likely trash <did I still keep digging them? Yes!>. I would pass over an area and get one of those noises that isn't quite an iron grunt so I would swing back over it a few more times, and get the display to say "Screwcap", then "Pulltab/Ring" Then it would say "25 cent", then "Iron", then "Hotrock". Throughout the day I had a few dozen of these events and every time I dig it would be a Brass Shell, or Aluminum can, or some other garbage.

The other thing I noticed is that BLM land is a great place for practicing on Brass shells... they are everywhere! I don't know why either, I almost always pick up my brass when I am shooting, but I know a lot of people that reload.

yeh i got out yesterday . yeh i am learning the machine better. i went to a old cellar hole and field.found old bullets and two old spoons. i turned down the gain and set the discrim at around 4. i had a way better time and dug with much more confidence.i am beginning to recognize the different beeps and noises and what ones to ignore. i am happy after this outing. just cant wait to find a coin in one of these cellar holes. stupid snow needs to go!i am think bout not going to work tomorrow it is suppose to be near 50 degrees. i haven't bailed out of work since last spring.take my daughter r and hit a couple old cellar holes.

Also.....location, location, and most important, LOCATION. You can only find what's there to find. Set up a test garden...bury them 4-7 inches and let them lie for a couple of weeks and learn learn learn! To heck with the vdi...it's only secondary info. The main thing is SOUND. GL & HH friend. Give it some time, and if things don't straighten up, send it back to Whites to have it checked! NO MANUFACTURER in existence is without an occasional mistake.
