I'm close to choosing a new detector to get back into coin hunting after many years but have a question. I see "VDI" charts on different models and wondered if these were developed by actual coins found in the ground or if they can be determined from air tests or self-buried coins. I'm really excited about getting back into it and am antsy for something to do until the ground thaws here in Ohio. Thanks.

Metal detecting stuff, At what depth would those VDI numbers be valid? Frank

Its an air test chart. Those numbers will be close down until its a weak signal which will vary, of course. I've dug 3-ringers at 9"+ that gave no vdi, only a faint tone with my AT Pro. I don't trust those charts. I dug a barber dime that rang 75 on mine. It was shallow and next to trash aluminum.

Frankn, it depends on the target and the soil. These were airtest numbers. I find the At Pro ID accurate to about 8-9 inches.
