Using an auger to dig for gold?

I found some really good ground recently in a public area that an auger would be really helpful for digging into faster. Has anyone here ever tried using one to get more gravel, how useful would it be?

Broken arms ribs and probably stitches at the least. If it grabs a big rock your in trouble fast.

if you've ever set fence posts you know what happens when you hit a rock in otherwise softer loose material?

Actually, you can use a small hand auger, 2 inches in diameter, for sampling.

I think that I would check the laws in your "public" area first. Being that it's in California, I doubt if it would be legal without a permit. From what I've seen in this thread, you're better off with a backhoe. The guy in the video sure is taking a lot of tools with him to run that augre... I've taken a post hole digger with me before and it works just fine.
He only took the dirt out of the top half of his hole... Even though he drilled down 4', it was too narrow to get the post hole digger even close to the bottom. Stick with a 6' digging bar because it might be legal in a public area, but checking the rules comes first.
