Re: USA highest military award purple heart

Looks real to me. Great find!

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

I have my doubts: I believe the Purple Heart reverse should read: For Military Merit whereas the Army Achievement Medal reads For Military Achievement.
PS: You now say the word is Merit versus Achievement. If that be so, then I believe its real.

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

Any gold hallmarks on the medal? I found a rifle marksman medal a while back marked sterling.

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

these are not made of precious metal

it anodized brass or bronze.

just under 2 million have been awarded

so about like any coin of that mintage

worth 10 to 20 mebbe in dug cond.

without the ribbon.

stillvery cool to find it

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

Of course it's a Purple Heart, but no way is it the USA's highest military award. That would be the Medal of Honor.

Indeed

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

Does it not have a named person incised on it, like our medals? Or where they blank.

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

No name on the back, but it's accompanied (eventually) with a certificate. Many were issued in or near the field of battle, sometimes in the hospital where the hero was being attended to; no time to engrave--nor is there (to my knowledge) any requirement to engrave the recipient's name on the medal.
Thankfully, veterans are entitled to one replacement set of their medals earned.

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

yeah those of us not in the military tend not to be in

the know on suchthings.

hope im a bit more with it than that.

Thanks for explaining, but the replacement seems open to abuse.

Why do you think it "seems open to abuse"? If your military record (as held in the archives) does not show the medals earned, you will not get replacements. It usually doesn't take a full minute of conversation to ferret out a bullsheeter sportin decorations...just sayin

Missing the point. Medals are worth money. I have one & I have the chance to get two :laughing7: Clearly I lost the first, didn't I :dontknow:

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

Even junk cameras have Macro Mode. Look for the tulip icon on your camera and it should do a better job. I would love to see better photos!

Re: USA highest military award purple heart

Open to abuse?? Personally, I doubt it.

To obtain replacement medals, the vet (or his kin) must submit a filled out Standard Form (SF 180). It is recommended that form DD 214 be included, however if that is not available the vet (or kin) should include pertinent information in the request (e.g. full name, service number, social security number, date of birth, and as much additional information as possible.)

Requests for replacement medals need to then be directed to the specific branch of the military in which the vet (or the veteran for whom you are applying if request is being made by next of kin) served. The request is either approved or denied based on the information submitted and substantiated.
