UPDATE:To dig or not to dig..that is the question

Your story reminds me of an outing several years ago in Arizona. My friend and I were MDing an old silver mining camp when I got a signal that nearly blew my eardrums. There was a story behind the site that a flash flood had hit the camp and washed away the saloon and the safe that was in it. WELL, I determined the size of the object by the signal and it was the proper size for a safe. Knowing that I had found the missing safe I started digging like there was no tomorrow. Guess what I found down about 2 1/2 feet------------------ the door to a potbelly stove. At least it was exciting for a while. Anybody living around the Phoenix area, do some research on The Tip Top silver mine. There were a lot of stone miners cabin foundations scattered around the area.

So far when I've went down into the 2' range I've salvaged beautifully preserved Cooers Lite beer cans....But one of these days. Hope yours is a coffee can full of double Eagles.
