I recently dug this at an 18th century home site. Definitely hand-forged iron (I did electrolysis on it before taking the pictures). It's pretty thick and heavy. The flat edge along the bottom is broke off but the rest of it is intact. There are a couple of decorative incised lines on it and there is a distinctive taper to it.

Any ideas?

Nice pics...good description....but ..... I can't venture a guess. I did notice the slight taper , the pinched hourglass shape and perfect holes. The slight raised area at the pinch are very symmetrical.
Can't wait to hear from the others.
....Mark.

Edit; just returned from the Vista Steam Engine and Threshing Bee show. There were many hand wrought trunion rods in wooden wagons, lumbering steam tractors even as diagonal braces on iron structures.

The end of a steering drag link. Tie rod ends go into the holes.

Smithy made buggy shaft eye (with the 'eye' broken off).

It looks to me like part of an adjustable hitch from some old farm implement.
