This was found in a ravine on and old family farm and it has me baffled. On the sails of the ship one can see the symbols of several different cultures. If I'm not mistaken there is the Moslem Crescent, The Jewish Star of David, the French Fleur de Lis (sp?), The Japanese Rising Sun, and the English Cross of St. George....not sure on all of them. It is close to a foot and a half in diameter and had some of that old cloth wrapped electrical cord connected to what looked like part on an old electro magnet. To this date I haven't been able to find anything close to it. I thought possibly there was a rotating color wheel behind it to give the illusion of sailing but at this point I'm open to all opinions. I should mention that it is cast iron and has some weight.

Can't find the ship but here is one called "Indian Days". It is a lamp. Dated 1931.

I think the ship is supposed to be the Mayflower. Here is a cast iron door stop from 1928 said to be the Mayflower. Note the sails.$(KGrHqUOKooE32h!88bnBOJu7sT4Eg~~0_3.JPG DCMatt

This forum is incredible. These are the best leads I've had since I found it. It would be nice to see the backside of the Indian light and the door stop ship is an exact match. The backside of the outer rim has a recessed area the would accommodate a circular piece 17" in diameter however, there are extensions that would prohibit a solid piece from laying flat in the recession. Thanks everyone for the input and pat yourselves on the back.

I was able to find this broken piece being sold as a door stop. The article made no mention of the circular rim being broken off. I believe, thanks to the "investigators" on this site, that what I have is the shell of a motion lamp. Thanks again to all who contributed.

My first thought was a fireplace andiron, but it would sit in the middle with the fire behind it, lighting it up.

this may sound silly but i'm thinking that being cast iron it was a decorative thing that sat on top of a parlor stove to help conduct radiant heat.

Close but no cigar :unhappysmiley: It's the frame to an old radio speaker. Potter_Tower_Adventurer_spkr.jpgPotter_Tower_Adventurer_spkr_more.jpg I knew what it was but wasn't sure what brand it was. This one was made by "Tower", these were called Cone Speakers, the electromagnet part you mentioned connected to a paper cone and made the sound. Might be worth something to a collector even as is. Here's a link about them THE HOME OF
