Found this piece of what appears to be copper. It sure looks like someone deliberatly made it this way for a purpose. While there are no attachment holes, there is a tiny fold along the one edge as if to swivel on those two points. It looks as if there is wear marks at each end. My first thought was some sort of wind flap as part of a weather vane ? Part of an old mousetrap door? No idea from my little corner. Any one recognize it, it must have had a purpose.thanks, vn

I have found pieces of copper around old home sites. Copper sheeting was used as flashing in the valleys on roofs, and around the chimneys where they stuck through. I think some of these pieces were what got trimmed off when the roofs were shingled.

Is that a single layer or a cone that's been flattened?

Just a single layer. A perfect uniform rounded edge on one end and a uniformly made fold over on the other edge. There are no rough edges from tin snip cutting. Looks entirely like it was made for something, possibly swiveling on the folds. Reminds me of how a butterfly works on a carb.

I'm thinking it was curved originally.....like the shape of a spade. That's the only thing that makes sense for the crimped end. Otherwise it seems to me that it would just be a straight cut. But who knows? I could be from some sort of piece of art or decoration.

Or the piece cut out when something larger was shaped into a cone around a pipe exit (like a house vent).
