Happened upon this rock a while back but still puzzled as to what it might be. I'm mostly a Native American artifact hunter so you can see why I just had to pick it up lol. Strange shape as if someone made it that way, and if not by some natural means there are 3 scratch/tally marks on the top side showing weathered patina, so I don't believe their are recent. The dimensions are
5 1/2 inches long, 1 1/4 wide and 1 1/4 tall, also weighs 13.2 ounces. Seems to have a very tiny reaction to magnets and doesn't leave a mark on paper. Brown outer crust with black core. Any help will be appreciated, Thanks

That rock didn't scratch, that's metal remnants from the knife meaning the rock is harder than the knife's steel. It's probably a chert nodule/concretion. No idea if it's an artifact, you'd have to post on the artifact section to get better advice on that :)

- and the outer layer is probably limonite, maybe enough iron in it to weakly attract a magnet

Thanks stdenis-jd for the information! I thought the same when I first scratched it, dang China made blade lol, but it did leave a indentation and the residue coming off is whitish. I could see it as a tool serving many purposes. A friend said he thought it might be a prime get outta here rock, the Native Americans would throw it at someone they didn't like while shouting get outta here lol
