Looks like a hay roller for farm machinery.

looks like arty to me...what is the diameter? artillery is measured in diameter, not length.

the expansion ring is what has me leaning towards munitions...narrow top, screw in fuze...expansion ring to shove it out the tube...

until it is cleaned...who knows? sorry

(to above): 3" diameter by what's shown and stated.
Are there any signs of threads in the hole?
I don't think it's a window sash weight, being hollow and without a rope loop.
I'm voting artillery, despite knowing fairly little about IDing them... But it seems to have a groove in the right place for whatever it's supposed to do.
Any markings on the bottom?

As indicated the base is 3 inches. I also noted the expansion ring near the base.

Thanks for your input. There are threads in the hole which leads me to believe something like a fuse could be screwed into it. There are no visible markings on the bottom.

Coming late to the discussion due to an unfortunate encounter with a stomach-virus.

Definitely a 75mm artillery shell, from somewhere between about 1900 to the 1960s. The large fuzehole in its nose indicates it is an antipersonnel type (not an armor-piercer), but I can't be any more specific than that because the thick rust encrustation is hiding the necessary identification details.

I think you are probably right....I thought of an artillery shell when I first uncovered it. I did not know whether I should call 911 or just let it go...... anyway I placed it on the ground and left it there for the day. The next day I came back and I pushed the dirt plug away from the hole and I discovered it was hollow. I then bought it back to the house.....took pictures and placed it on Treasurenet.
