The medal was found with a number of old coins and button...Being excited because it looked old was great but the problem I am having trying to identify the piece...If anyone has any idea please feel free to respond. Found in Western new york with the other items the dates of the coins were 1842 and older...Thanks John

The new Pic is of the back , after cleaning the back I noticed at the bottom Right side it looks like the word (President) This might help in the identification of the piece...any ideas will be helpful....Thanks Seeker

Re: unknown medal found at an old site

What machine, depth, area etc. I really think you have quite a find there. Im leaning on the jesuit priest and indiana with spear. If you follow the object down toward the "tall" indian's feet you can see the head of the spear. What a find, wonder what something like that is worth!!

Re: unknown medal found at an old site

Strange how people see different things. I see a knight in armor holding a lance on one side of a crypt with a big cross on top. The knight is resting his left hand on the crypt. On the other side of the crypt is a woman wearing a dress resting both hands on the crypt. Appears to be a comemerative for a fallen hero to me. Pass the rum. Monty

The Medal is as large as a silver Dollar ,made of pewter or some sort of cast metal ..Hope this will help.....
Thanks Seeker

Could be a memorial token honoring the death of some high ranking chief, or official...
just another wild guess... ::)
Whatever good find...

Around the entire medal there is writing you can make out letters here and there ... ;D Seeker

Great find there.... To me it looks like a man and a women both with flags in their hands and that the cross is standing on a sheild / crest.
All that without the rum :o

Yea, that definetly says president..Sit down with soem coin conditioner and a magnifying glass and i bet you can make out the rest :)

here is why I think its British... On most of their medals...it has a straight line across the bottom where the picture ends..and there is normally some word or date engraved in that space....
Would someone please figure this out before I go mad...

Yeah...I can see the shield and the man and woman holding----flags......and I can see where it might say president...and before the word president looks like maybe it says "new"? ??? I don't know... but it's a really awesome find!!!

;)

Its betsy Ross just finishing up on the Flag and showing it to George...

IMO, and forgive me because I'm from Washington state and am not very familiar with the East Coast, but the design looks very similar to the seal on the New York state flag. ?The difference, of course, is that there is obviously a cross over the seal on your medal. ?It may be a New York college President's medal. ?I assume that there are older colleges around you there. ?Also, many colleges have lost the religious symbols from their seals due to various political and historical changes.

There are some avenues to look down, and I think you should focus on older colleges with religious foundations. ?I don't think it's British due to the word president. ?Keep us posted

No rest for the weary.....I also, think that the emblem between the two people is a crest ,on which the cross at top is seated on....I think that the "woman" is actually a priest because of the way the hands are held...like they are reading a book...and I think it is british somewhere in 1700 ...It could have been a medal made in britian for the United Stated ...............thats my story and I am sticking to it...until I change my mind

Seeing that it is holed, it must be a metal or medallion of some sort. You might want to check out 1700s era British, French and American military awards and insignia.

Good guesses people, but this is a TEMPERANCE MEDAL. I have included images of a similar piece in my hoard of some 100 temperance medals/tokens (I don't collect these, I just have a lot of stuff!). The originals did NOT come holed, but some may have been holed at that time to be suspended from a top bar/ribbon. The metal is WHITE-METAL. Mine is 41mm, and the color is a bit off in the pic, due to my light source. The Flag held by the left standing man says "Sobriety", and the one by the woman "Domestic Comfort". I suspect the rest of the text is readable in the images, if not, I can transcribe.

I have some 600000 exonumia items in stock (yes, some are very cheap!), and conduct business under AAA Historical Americana - World Exonumia. Stop by my web site at www.exonumia.com , or send me an email to get on my email list: I am producing auction catalogs, and would be happy to send you a FREE LIST of all items matching your 'want list'.
