Solved! The eagle is/was chrome plated and is from a mailbox.

I was detecting a local park today for the first time and found a eagle about two inches down facing straight up. It measures 1 3/4" wing tip to wing tip, 7/8" from head to tail, and just short of 1/8" thick.

There are no marks/words/initials or anything on it that I can see. On the back in the center there was some sort of pin/clasp to attach the eagle which was broken off (likely why it was lost to start with).

I am curious what the eagle is for (was it a military hat pin, uniform, or something), a possible date, and any idea what metal it is? The coloring on the front is much lighter in real life, but no simple scrubbing with a tooth brush and water seems to clean it any better. On the back it is much cleaner in the center and is bright and shinny so I was wondering if it is silver or simply chrome plated.

Here is a picture of both the front and back of the eagle...

It's not military, hard telling what it originally came off of.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure but thought I'd ask. After trying to clean it further it appears to be chrome platted (may have it tested by my aunt with her metal acid kit). Either way it's a interesting find.

Reminds me of decorative eagles I've seen on mailboxes. Anyway, it's still a neat find, and something I'd be just fine with digging.

I bet that is exactly what it came off! I have seen several mailboxes in the old parts of town that have eagles as well. Just haven't seen them in awhile so I never thought of it. Thanks for clearing it up.

I posted the eagle on another forum as well and got the same answer. :D

given that the back side is flat and undesigned, and based on the position of the imperfections in the center of the back I would say that it is a pin minus the actual pin. My dad has a lot of them, one of them in particular that he got when he became an eagle scout decades ago had the pin attached in the same places that i see the imperfections here. Its not an eaglescout pin, and I'm not sure where it came from or what it was for.

My original thought was a pin and when I see a eagle I think military or similar. It truly is hard to find what it was originally but thanks for the input. It does give other options. Either way it may not have been so interesting if I knew what it was. :D
