I wish we could all just start saying CW versus CW-era without recrimination. Really splitting hairs.

Calling the slug from the CW era is giving it a wishful thinking title without any proof...it could be a deer hunters shotgun slug from the 1960's...or maybe just a few years ago...then again, the slug could predate the CW by half a century or more...

Proof is required to substantiate historic placement...

Not sure about a wormed shotgun slug from the 60's. I guess what I'm saying is that if it's a bullet listed in Civil War Projectiles II, it's safe to call it a CW bullet as opposed to a CW-era bullet. The same goes for any other CW-era munition. If it's CW-era, it's CW. I'm a little off your point, however, and certainly agree that if it's not a CW-era bullet, there's no reason to call it CW at all. We should probably ID it first. :icon_thumright:

How is this classified as a CW bullet? Wishful thinking?

Don't see the relationship...

Stefen, This bullet was found in a Civil War cavalry camp along with numerous other CW items & bullets, including a CW gun cleaning brush, which I posted on TNet last week. Of course, I have found modern items in CW camps, but judging by the other items found, the patina, the worming and other aspects of this bullet, I think it is fairly safe to say it is leaning more toward a Civil War bullet than a modern one from the 1960s, thus narrowing down the search to that century instead of another. As kyphote said, we need to ID it first.

Also, after about 30 yrs. of metal detecting, I don't do 'wishful thinking' as far as MD items are concerned. Either they are or they aren't, which only determines their destination box; either shoebox or display box. As Brenda Lee Johnson would so eloquently say, 'thank you, thank you very much.' LOL ;D Breezie

I agree Breezie. I have found modern bullets in CW camps and the patina is a dead give away. Plus it is wormed. Everything is leaning towards a CW bullet. So many bullets were used in the civil war and the confederates were very creative. They even took flintlock rifles and converted to percussion. I am by no means an expert on bullets but anybody who has dug CW bullets knows the difference from modern ones. Maybe when 4-H gets back from vacation he can identify it for you.

This explanation did not accompany this posting...hence, the qualification question.

Perhaps it was the way the question was phrased. Implied that the digger was an amateur, which the digger is certainly not. Your point is still well taken.

TreasureHound & Kyphote, very true; thank you. Stefen, sometimes I get over excited about an item and don't give out all the details when posting. In my original post I stated it was a CW bullet, and it would have been better to explain more. Hopefully we can solve this one. :D Breezie

There is a bullet listed as an unknown carbine that mics at .563 in diameter and .642 in length that looks a lot like your bullet Breezie. With your sbeing pulled that might be the difference in the lengths.

Oh, that sounds great; thanks VaYank. I just found the one you're talking about in McKee & Mason #10; pages 22-23. Below is a scan from those pages. If M & M don't know what it is, I guess it's safe to say, we don't either, so I'm going to green check this as solved. Thanks again VaYank, and Monty, you nailed it too!
