unique wood block

Found this in old house, looked around for others, but found none. What was it's purpose? How old? Has anyone seen one of these before? same block, both pics are on it...........NGE

My hunch is that these were wooden toys. The top one would've been a piece that went in a "fort" of stacked up blocks--where someone could fire out of a hole in the brick...and the other piece could've been "stationed" outside.

Looks to me as someone who was just drawing on some wood and pretty darn good too! Really hard to say with photos! Nice find!
