So, I was hunting with my good buddy Roy and I found this really unique find at about 5 inches. It was emblazoned with a beautiful "US" and I knew right away what that meant! At first it looked like the sole of a shoe. But looking at it further, I determined that it was the remains of a leather horse brush used by the Union. Below is a buckle ans some muskets, and a piece of shrapnel.

Hey Paul, good question, actually they are brass rivets and that is what the detector picked up. Also, Dugfinds, I used the word "unique" as something that you don't find everyday, or rarily find. In my opinion, it is unique, it is the only "one" I have ever found, therefore it is unique to me. ;) Besides, this isnt Ebay, it is TNet. :) Thanks everybody for your kind comments. HH

I know & I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Its a message to all. I have found Unique finds as described by the British Museum, but would never call them it.

Every find is unique to me but the typology of the find isn't.

"Very rare, uncommon or unusual".

I took English all the way up to the seventh grade and I say it's acceptable usage. :P

Well thats ok then :P

how cool is that! to find an intact embossed piece of leather in the ground from 140 or so years ago is a unique find in my book. ::) now i guess the trick will be to preserve it since it is now out of whatever conditions preserved it so well. one of the more interesting finds i have seen in a while! thanks for sharing it!

I agree with you, dugfinds. I teach music history at the college level, and I wish I had a buck for every paper on which I had to circle the phrase "very unique" or "highly unique." "Unique" can have no degree. It either is, or it isn't. Kinda like saying that your T.V. set is either "very off" or "very on." ;D Now I know that those phrases weren't used in this post, but I don't go around correcting all the grammar and spelling mistakes on this site--now THAT would be a chore!!! Doesn't give us a remarkably intelligent image to those that visit this site as guests! So to be honest, the typos upset me more. Sometimes you'd think this site were run out of Japan or China there are so many misspellings. So in short I'm not too worried about the word "unique" here. I don't like the word either, and I only use it sparingly. But I catch your drift.

Sentinel--this find is outstanding. I love the fact that we are still finding leather (and rarely, cloth) finds from the Civil War era. I'm glad you got to see this come out of the ground. Still waiting to find your first CW shoe? When you find one, don't worry about which foot it went on--they were the same for both feet!

Finding a leather horse brush , superbly unique finds Sentinel. Grats.

I hate when a thread turns into english / spelling lessons. Sentinel had a great day and you want to hijack the thread and dazzle us with your BS. If it is really that important to you, send him a PM.

Tom

I taught for 30 years and I never felt compelled to let others know what I know except in a classroom. To much has been spent on those two. Congrats on your finds and May you find more great artifacts. Have a great one just like the rules state.

Hey Sentinel....those are some totally awesome finds you got there!!! Maybe we can find some stuff like that at Pipsico...ya' think?

Spelling is a big pet peeve of mine, but I am not a teacher...just a parent! I don't feel the need to correct others, only my children!

Have fun at that site Sentinel....keep us posted on any new finds you come across! See you in less than two weeks!!! Whooo Hooo!

Thanks for sharing your find and your story. Keep them coming. I really enjoy the diversity of finds on this net. I probably never would have seen something like your find if it weren't for your post and the many others posted daily. Thank You and keep digging!

You earned the right to call it anything that you d@%*+! well please to call it. The Sentinal found something absolutely astonishing in my book. How is that? I don't think that astonishing would offend anyones sensibilities.......Chris

Great Find!!! Can you get some better pictures of it? How did you determine it was a horse brush?? and I am not being negative, doubtful or anything like that.. I just have never seen anything like that listed in any of the relice books or on line.. and I have many.. many.. raining days pouring over the relic books!

Let me see... I know 5 people who have been digging Civil War sites for 20 years.. been to the shows.. read all the books... and I have never seen that listed... yeah.. I think unique fits.

I'm glad I stirred debate.

Yes I agree the find IS more important than the English & I said from the start its a GREAT FIND.

Sorry for what people see as hijacking which is not my intention.

Remember - Diversity & opinion is what this forum is about.

Keep posting your excellent finds ;D

Hey {Sentinel},
Thanks for the reply. Now that I see a picture of it, I can see what your find used to look like.

Very cool indeed!

a most rare and highly interesting find indeed shows that there was "horse" troops at the site---Ivan

This brush was found in exactly the same spot where a detachment of Gen. Kearny's cavalry was located on a Union line at a very famous Civil War battlefield. It is densely overgrown and probably has had little human contact since then. The rifle pits and earthworks are still CLEARLY visible. No sir, I guarantee its from the Civil War Era.

Also, you didnt list all the different meanings of the definition "unique." This is listed as No. 5 on dictionary.com:

Unique- "5. not typical; unusual: noun"

lets see---civil war era us military horse curry brush ---at a civil war battle site--- at a location on the battlefeild where us "horse" troops were stationed during the "battle" ---thickly grown with bushes so that there was little after battle human traffic thru the area.----- nah not a chance its civil war related ;D ;D ;D just kidding of course it is good find and theres most likely others there too. Ivan
