Thats the conclusion I'm coming to, it seems a strange connection to the Military.

Ive been told they were sold for children primarily, the small ones like the one posted and ones I have found were mostly children or sometimes women. The men's ones used by certain groups of soldiers were much larger and better made.

As you are probably already aware this is not military related. Still a nice find though

how can i tell if this is really cival war? some of the 2nd corps went to danville after the surrender. and i found this 30 miles away from appomattox on the way to Danville . just off old 29.
A days horse ride is 30 miles so its a possibility they camped there on the way to Danville.

is this one real ? seen it posted online, seems the same. except i got 2 tacks with mine

Seriously? You're asking if ebay is the best point of reference for an historical find? Of course not, you need a much better contemporary source of reference. This to me looks like another classic urban myth spread on the internet. Although I have not done my own primary research, so I'm listening to others on this one. (ie. I could be wrong)

well im talking bout tests on the actual object i have. such as how to tell what metal its made of? or the tacks in it.
Should i hit it on the back with a copper brush on the dremel?
or what

Its brass.

Even if you found it at a Civil War battlefield site, it would have no value unless you had verifiable proof. Most of the alleged Civil War heel plates on eBay are worthless because they really have no proof of where it was dug. Unfortunately, there are lots of con artists on eBay (and other sites) when it comes to Civil War relics...

The brass heel plates with cut-out heart designs, as well as occasional other designs, have turned up over the years in various sites all around the country. The majority appear to come from home sites and similar primarily civilian sites in context with other dug items of mid to late 19th century period. :love2:

A search of TreasureNet posts (white search box at the top right of this page where it shows; "Enter search phrase...."), will reveal a surprising number of comparable heart design heel plates having been dug and then posted here.

Included in the following thread below is a complete woman's boot/shoe with the heart design heel plate still attached;

when I was younger - I would scrap them (been TH'ing since 1975 age 12)
but now I save them - military related or not - they are from 1800s and still a relic - to most a cool relic
one in pic is from a mens boot - my friend has one with a heart that is about 1 1/2 ins. and looks like its from a small woman
or a childs
