I have found different sizes of these small some what horse shoe pieces at early sites. This one is approximately 3" X 3-1/2" X 1/4" thick, some what horse shoe shaped with a cross bar. Seems to be made of iron. Any Ideas?? (Will try to give a better description as surly someone know what these are) Appear to be built heavy duty. They could almost pass for a very small horse shoe if they had the nail holes and didn't have the cross bar. The 2 ends have a some what T shape on the very end. Were found at early home sites. Would sure like to know what they are!!!

Looks like it might have been a pivot type thing with ball bearings in it. For a gate? :-\

Hello; the one in the picture was found at a Fur Trade Era and (or) possible trading post site. We are currently doing archaeological work to distinguish which. One problem with this site (although in a remote location) we are having to deal with later (mid 1800s) contamination as a early home site was nearby. I have also found these at other 1800s home sites. The location where the pictured one came from has yielded Trade Axes, Iron Awls, Jews Harps, An abundance of French Clasping and Bouchron knife blades, Lead Whizzers, Many Copper Points, Cone Earrings etc etc. It would be good to know what it is and to know what era it is from. I am going to take a wild stab at this...It looks like piece of the locking hasp of an old strongbox...had three iron interlocking pieces

It looks familiar, but I can't for the life of me place it! Aggravating... I would say by the craftsmanship it looks to be machined or forged from a machined mold, so its probably newer rather than older. What is that shiny spot on the lower left leg? Can you post some pics from different angles, flipped over/standing up?

Still trying to get this strange piece I.D. A hardware part from a early strongbox was mentioned. Would like to see a photo of such for ID comparison as this would be very interesting and part of a puzzle if it could be proven. Any ideas?? Rob

Well that site discusses babbitt bearings, which don't have rollers. I'm thinking this seems to be a roller bearing part...a pillow block type is definately possible... but an old lockbox hasp piece could be it too, it would be interesting to see an old one of those.

I was thinking along the same lines as Down in Dixie, some sort of axle support, bearing race, etc.. What throws me is, how was it mounted to anything? I mean way back then it would have to have a "foot" with holes for screwing or nailing- for mounting in other words. Scrap that Idea. I still think it is newer rather than older, though. been thinking about it for a few days now.... still drawing a blank and it is frustrating! I'm pretty sure I have seen that same part, or something real similar but for the life of me, I can't get it.

Sorry I can't be of much help.
