Underwater metal detector

Garrett Seahunter Mark II is what I have and I like it. It's PI machine and has a shortened shaft that comes with it for underwater use. I use it for beach hunting but I bought it after reading an extensive post by a diver. Is guaranteed down to 300 ft. You'll get a dozen recommendations. Monty

Daniel,
I have used the following and own them:
Whites
Garrett
HeadHunter
Fisher
The Whites can be ify, The Garrett always there for me, takes beating I also use an Infinium outside of Harbours and the Seahunter in with pulse, Head hunter was great but prone to flooding it needs a more robust headset, but works great on land if only I could trust it underwater, Fisher pings anything, too many techniques,
for field work though the battery life of the Garret is awesome and the unit is good. I treat them all well but they do get bumped dropped or with the owner bounced over the surf zone, I go garret for money and results.

Good Luck 99*

Could you explain just a little more about the "ify" Whites? I too am looking for a shallow water detector and could use all the advice I can get.

It may be that my whites needs a service but I find that when I turn the coil side on to determine the depth of the object I get a better tone return with the other units and with the whites is not consistent..again I use the Garrett because I have zero issues with them ever, the Fisher although good needs a power source to charge and this can be bad if youre far out with power. The manufacuteres of whites may have a solution or upgraded their unit by now, I do give them all a good chance though, very fair. Some people swear by whites I am just giving you my opinion, also stay clear of my favourite, the Infinium if you dont have the patience, once you get the know how this unit is good, very good. 99*

I use a Detector Pro Diver. The handle is in 2 sections, so you can remove a section and set it to your comfortable lenght. All the circuitry is in the headphones, so the coil and handle are quite light. Works great on land too. I love it!

I too have to go with the Excal 1000 for the majority of dives and types of hunts. Fishers Impulse and CZ20 are also good to 200 feet though I have only had them as deep as 165 foot. The Whites Surfmaster is very good also and you can use the shorter diver poles. Whites is a pulse and like most PI's, it likes tiny iron nails and such, as does the Infinium. I only use non rechargable batteries in detectors as when they lose power they just grow weaker. Rechargables just stop. Excal is the only one that has a recharge system and it lasts a long time, is deep and well worth the money. Tesoro Sand Tiger and Tiger Shark are also good machines for the water and rated to 200 foot and come with that important lifetime warranty which only Fisher offers also. Never taken a Detector Pro diving but have used it shallow wading.
