So, I was very overwhelmed today, because it’s an off day with my ADHD. I decided to go to the bank and get some coin rolls to look through. I did this to help distract from my problems.

I opened a dime roll, and I IMMEDIATELY saw a silver dime. I could tell right away it was silver. All I could see was the edge. I picked it up and looked at it, only to discover it was a 1942 MERCURY DIME!

I find it unbelievable that I found this in a coin roll from the bank!

Well, that made my day better!

Sorry to sound a buzz kill & congrats on the silver, but I thought the whole point of CRH was to get silver, so why is it unbelievable?
PS. With asperger, I take things literally! (ie. seen whole rolls of silver half dollars etc...)

I thought silvers were very difficult to find in coin rolls. I’ve never found ANY silvers in a coin roll, until today. I found two silver dimes in circulation, but never found one in a coin roll.

I actually thought coin roll hunting was for errors mostly. I didn’t think I could find a silver in a roll.

Apologies for the confusion.

No apologies needed, just followed a few threads on here & all they mostly look for is silver. I guess they only post their successes but seen tons of silver from rolls. Something I'm jealous of because our silver is pre-decimal & can't be found in banks. So it would be unbelievable in our rolls as they are not in circulation.
See the whole forum here:

and a recent post of a whole roll (although their first!):

Your best chance is to ask if they have customer wrapped rolls instead of bank machine ones.

Not a common find. I used to coin roll hunt for silver dimes and usually got one silver Rosie per $100 in dimes (1 in a 1,000). My ratio for Mercs was probably one per $300 worth of dimes searched (1 in 3,000).

You got the one that got away. :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on a silver! The only time I usually have luck CRHing is with halves... like Cru mentioned I got a solid roll once! It's a lot of fun.

Nice find!!! Never heard of coin roll hunting. Didn't think something that old would still be out there. Asking for customers rolls makes sense. They may not have been paying attention to the coins or just didn't realize they were rolling a silver. Congrats

Congrats on your find, jnicholes. That's a beautiful dime!
I tried coin roll hunting once with...maybe a half-dozen rolls of $0.50 pieces, and didn't find a single silver coin.
I think those of you that have the patience to do coin roll hunting are impressive - I couldn't do it.

I took a bunch of rolls of quarters to the bank recently (I rolled them myself, and I'm 100% sure there were zero silver coins in them) and I asked the bank teller if he had any strange or old coins. He said he doesn't see them often and didn't have any that day; he also said, sadly, that most of the old coins he sees are brought in by kids who stole them from their parents and didn't understand the numismatic value of the coins.

In my opinion, any silver coin find in the middle of February is a good find.

Congrats on the Merc,
Dave

The snow in my front yard... I think I need a larger coil on my detector? :laughing7:

Yessir makes your heart skip a beat to see that. Freebird Tim pegged it pretty well. Pre-covid ratio was right up on 1 out of 1000 for a silver dime, 1 out of 3000 for a merc and at most 1 out of 500,000 dimes for me personally to get a Barber. I'd hate to think how many dimes I'd have to search to get a seated liberty lol. Thats many dollars and hours boiled down to a ratio but theres that exciting moment when you haven't found anything in thousands of dollars and countless days and you see multiple silver edges in the roll. They slowly add up. Its a pleasant distraction but it gets debilitating when you can't even go to the store without stopping by the bank. Today I went to a bank I've never been to before and the teller knew my name. Not the first time that happened either. I'm trying to quit but when my luck is bad I feel its about to turn good and when I'm hot I'm hot lol.

Good job, you may be hooked, be careful! It took me 5 years to get that monkey off my back. Between 2009-2014, I hit the rolls and found 1,000+ silver rosies, 100+ mercs, and six barber dimes.
No solid silver rolls but best roll held 27 silvers. Also found close to 100 silver Canadians.

Very addictive and no too time consuming, unless you’d like it that way.
