First I will start off by saying hello. New to the site but not new to CRH. I have been doing a lot of dimes and halves lately with ok success but decided to do some cents today as its been ages. I used to sort copper often with the occasional wheatie and was content. I assumed today would be the same as it always has been with a few random wheats and some copper, but I was wrong. I'm still in shock after finding the holy grail of wheat cents. Check it out!!!!! 1909 S VDB.

It for sure does look real to me as far as I can tell. As it has done been stated the period after the D does look in the proper location to indeed be a S mint wheat. This is one incredible find. Also I might add that the S looks legit also the little die chip looking thing in the S is another sign as to it being real! Keep us posted.

Holy Crap!!! Definitely get it slabbed. That's one to pass down to the grandkids.

I got ridiculously lowballed at the LCS. Told me 400 was the best they could do. Guess I better have it graded. I'm sure its worth more. There is a reputable coin show coming to town next month and they grade coins there from what I'm told. The saga continues.

At any large coin shows, they have representatives for the major grading services. They typically offer a show discount if you have multiple coins to send out. Do NOT sell it to a LCS. They will need to make money on the flip transaction so it will be lower than the stated value. In your case, the LCS wanted to make a lot of money on the flip transaction. Take your time and be patient. Get it graded and then flip it on eBay.

I respectfully declined and he's back in the safe box. Do they grade the coins at the show or do they have to be sent out? I was told they grade on site.

What an awesome find, congrats!! I agree, get it slabbed an it will increase the value. WTG!

They will send it out. Depending how busy they are, they might give you a grade estimate, but these representatives are not the actual graders. You will fill out the paperwork and they'll bag it to be processed. Each coin will bagged separately and placed in a bin to be sent out. No worries about someone taking your cent and substituting a lesser coin. The major grading companies have built their business on trust and security. The horror stories that you hear are just that - stories.

Latest news development on this coin. I have someone now offering me $1000 for it. I dont know if I can turn that down. LOL

You could buy some nice bullion with that :)

I am thinking the same thing mercury1. I like to keep my assests as liquid as possible.

I'm always conflicted by things like this.

Do you want to ignore any potential growth on the value of a coin, or trade it in for bullion at current prices? If prices dropped to $25/oz or below I wouldn't hesitate, but at the same time, the recession has damaged the value on a lot of collector fields (sports memorabilia, comics, etc.) It's a dilemma.

I agree. It is a dilemma. I've been flopping back and forth since yesterday about what to do. My wife is ready to tranquilize me and make the coin disappear. LOL. I see it like this, collectible coins will wane in value if stuff really hits the fan. Straight silver or gold will only increase in a situation like that. My bet, stuff will continue to hit the fan. Pretty sure I'm gonna sell it and be done with it. Im glad i have had the opportunity to own this coin and will enjoy it until sold. I will also take many pictures. Haha.

1 cent liquid asset :-) grats on the great find! sure the value might go up of the cent in the future but this is a decent opportunity to buy with silver being sub 30.

but either way the that coin will undoubtedly hold value.

That would be reasonably fair offer I think. Plus whoever the buyer is that would give them room to get out from in under quickly if need be. Me personally I would value it at around 1500-2000. I am not good at all though when it comes to grading. None the less this is an amazing find and an amazing cent to find in the "wild." As far as hanging on to it goes my suggestion would be does it make you happy to own it or other coins? Anyways thanks for sharing and keep us updated.

If someone is offering $1k without authentication and grading, I would take it. But you are wrong in your assumption that collector coins will wane in value. When talking about the key dates and rarities, prices are setting record prices and only continue to set the bar higher as there is always a demand for these. Now, common dated collector coins will ebb/flow in value based on demand as there is no shortage of the supply. Again, congratulations on a once in a lifetime find.

Correct, after all, coins constantly corrode, reducing the supply of good condition coins.

Wow!!! Awesome find! I would probably grade that coin XF. Obverse looks a little soft (normal w/ 09SVDBs), but reverse wheat lines are super sharp. The VDB is definitely there, but kinda weak. Slabbed NGC/PCGS coins in this grade are selling for about $1000 on eBay right now so if you don't have an emotional attachment to the coin, I'd take that offer and run! That way you don't have to deal w/ slabbing it & if it comes back vf30-35, it would prob be worth a little less than $1G.

Baddbluff, you and I are on the exact same wave length. Selling it tomorrow. No hassle, and a pocket full of cash to invest in something else.
