Looks like nickle. Looks like a button. Post it on the Revolutionary or/and Civil War forums. They may have more info. I'm not a button person, but there are some smart folks on here. -Noodle

Nice find though!!!!
That is what I was thinking however the design threw me off a bit. It looks rather military. Thanks for the input though.

I bet it's silver or silver plated if it came out of the ground looking like that! It certainly isn't made of nickel. That's huge! Could we get a width measurement on the item?

I agree that its silver or plated because it just looks too nice for it not to be. Great find though I hope someone can make an id on it for you.

There is a ruler under the first pic. I am not sure if it is silver plated or not. It is pretty cool though whatever it is. Thanks for all the replies!!

My Wild Guess:
Decorative nickle plated brass valve handle (knob) from a steam radiator or other type heater, located in the left rear corner of the west bound passengers waiting lobby of the train station you spoke of.

To me it appears to be the bell portion of a Victorian mechanical door bell. There was a similar, but less ornate, one at a home I once lived in. Turning a button on the outside rang the bell on the other side of the door. never needed a battery!! 2 dgs.

I agree. Used to live in a house with one that had a peacock on it.

It could have been a knob for? The little indent looks like a stop on the inside. Just a guess.
