That was also my first thought , but the opening is too small for that....
Could it be a part of a key ?

Just a WAG ;D

What's a WAG ? ???

PS.:
It is easy to note it was hand made .
Please don't you think it could be Celtic or roman. I'm in America NOW ;D

A WAG is a "Wild A$$ Guess"

You state that you are in the U.S. now, but didn't say whether it was found in the US or Europe.

As to Roman or Celtic...If found in stateside, probably not.

And as to being handmade, there is a possibility that it was machine stamped, as well. Someone needs to make a positive identification, which then will make it possible to determine if it is handmade or a production factory item.

it looks like an old skelaton key that was broken off. Maybe the other half is in the chest that is filled with all of the gold!! LOL still it is a great find. WTG

You can tell by the shape it is a key.

Nice find. Can't wait to know what it is.

Its not Roman, Celtic, Saxon. Most likely post-medieval. Maybe a spur attachment. Also it doesn't look brass or bronze.

Hi Paul,
a Key for an old antique trunk , is what my wife also says
This city was founded 1775 .It could be from that time . Incredibly I found it only
in 5 cm depth .
I mean, you never know these things are going to be found ! :o

Looks like part of an older buckle, 1200-1400s, the broken end would have a fork looking piece that was fitted into the leather strap. HH, Mike
