I found this ("Union Metallic. Cartridge Co.") U.M.C.Co. No.3 casing in a city park in Connecticut while metal detecting.

I realize The company was operational in Bridgeport Connecticut , However this was fired and was just wondering what it was , some suggestions were a 8 gauge shotgun shell or a punt gun.

Industrial shotguns have long been used for specialized applications in servicing lime kilns, blast furnaces, and even for making seismic shots. Typically of 8 gauge, or larger, industrial shotguns are much larger than shotguns designed for use as weapons and are designed for firing using fixed mount stations, not being intended for firing from the shoulder. They are used for removing lime deposits from inside kilns and for removing slag deposits from inside blast furnaces, both being used during routine maintenance.
I could see a 4th of July Signal Cannon firing in the park to start the towns festivities. It looks to be a low pressure shell.....much like a salute/blank....
My WAG would be .......
1. Signal Cannon
2. Industrial Application

Whatever it was...it wasn't shoulder fired.

I forgot about industrial applications. I remember the movie Flight of the Phoenix where Jimmy Stewart started the airplane with what appeared to be shotgun shells.

Right you are BCH.....The Coffman Starter System. Whats also amazing is how many different aircraft used that system for either primary or backup starting, up to and including the B-52's. That Jimmie Stewart Movie was an excellent classic and its unbelievable that the aircraft was actually flown for the scene.

That is way to big for an 8 gauge witch is .835 " Dia.
1 1/2 gauge punt gun is more likely, they measure 1.459" Dia.
The head stamp is pictured here but you have to buy the 40 $ cd to find out anything about it.

Good link Taz. It must be a 3 ga. because its marked that way.

ADDED: I see it measures 1-1/2 dia. (I misread 1 1/4) now Im not sure.

In the late 1800's- early 1900's this park was a golf course then the state put the highway in now its just a city park
