typical places for caches

Problem is that it is on a public preserve property and at the moment there are no rules prohibiting THing so we don't want to

No offense, but you're conducting this sort of excavation on a public site with no "additional" permission? I'm not sure I'd be doing that, nor busting-up or taking the slate nor the privy...........sounds like a good way to get in trouble, like taking park benches or picnic tables. An entry of an MDer in the police blotter wouldn't be a good thing.

The easiest ( and probably most likely to get you aressted) way i can think of is just take a sledgehammer to the stone and break it in half, that way you cuold just prop up one side and dig up whatever it si thats down there. or you could get a panel of wood get some buddies to lift the slab a litle and slip a 2 ton jack under it and just lift it that way.

Two ton comealong hooked to a tree with ropes around the tree and slab should slide it right out of the way with minimal excavation on the tree side.

None taken, I'm actually glad you point that out because I too wouldn't want to get into trouble. The slate was/is below about two inches of dirt, the house is abandonned, fallen in, overgrown, and the privy is in desrepair and overgrown also. At this point the only thing that I have done, is dug a 1'X1' hole next to the slab. To date, I've broken nothing, taken nothing, and torn down nothing. I've replaced all my divots and left all the vegetation alone. I think the preserve doesn't even know the homestead is there, and I don't think they care. They would "keep out signs" on it to keep people from injuring themeselves if they did. There are several other foudnations on the preserve that are historical mills, homesteads, and public housing. They are on the hiking trail and there aren't even rules about climbing into and out of these cellar holes but we don't even do that. Maybe since you've pointed this out the best thing to do is get the two ton come along like was suggested and just slide the slab aside. Then nothing get's damaged and there is no chance we overstay our welcome.
