I found this little thing during a quick 25 minute hunt at an 1870 house. Any ideas on what it could be and how old it is? I showed it to a few people who suggested type block of some sort for a printing press but why would it have a square around the outside of the X? Thanks!

Cool type block
X marks the spot.

Thanks guys, the square outlining the X is the same height as the X itself. Could this be a special character? Possibly just very worn?

Could have been used to show how to properly marked a box on a form, ballet, etc. Think about modern forms, now they show the proper and improper way to fill in a bubble.

Could have been used to show what features came on a product versus a competitors product, sort of like a spec sheet.

There are so many possibilities, they are endless.......
