This past weekends digs... I did pretty good for quality. Among other things, I found two Civil War artillery shells to include a Confederate Read and a Yankee Schenkl. Also pictured is a U.S. boxplate that is marked "MADE BY J.I. PITTMAN". That's a first for me. The Schenkl has a combination Time and Concussion fuse. It is also another first for me. I had to render both shells inert, run them through electrolysis and then boil them in wax. Hence, the delay in getting them posted. I hope you enjoyed looking at them. Thanks...

Here is a close-up of the Time and Concussion fuse...

So how would that timer work? Look like it was set for a minute? Very interesting finds...just don't blow off any necessary body parts.

I'm still researching exactly how they worked. I do know though, that the numbers represent seconds. There is an arrow on the other side that I think is used to set the time. It's around 4 seconds. Thanks for checking it out!

Man you rock :headbang: can I come hunt with you?

That is incredible!! But those shells would make me nervous, not that ill ever find one but how do you go about making them safe?

I want to come hunt with you as well, and I live local to you, pick me, pick me!!!

Nice find. I also saw another post where you found a butt load of Silver. Nice work! You must get lots of field time. I haven't been out in 2 years now, but am looking forward to trying my hand at the beach in two weeks...

Each shell is different and I've been doing my finds for 30+ years. Bottom line is that you need to get all remnants of the black powder out of the shells. What you end up with is no more dangerous than a bowling ball.

Not that I would EVER try (too big of a fraidy-cat) but how would you get to the powder? drill a hole in them? wow, still seems dangerous.
By the way, congratulations on another great day for you Aqua-man. Fairly super hero-ish the way you've been dominating recently.

Once again,,,and I'm sure it won't be the last time,,,, I bow before you :notworthy: Fantastic pieces of history your saving :headbang:

More great stuff there AC ! You have an excellent site/sites there buddy. Keep postin them up man.Fine job there!

You should be ashamed of yourself Aqua. How dare you have the gall & audacity NOT to be posting your usual crate fulls of 16th & 17th century silver coins :laughing7:

Those look awesome (admittedly though, when I first saw the pic I though you caught two rare, fresh elephant droppings on film).

BTW, writing a book on the history of your area. Please send me a detailed spreadsheet of all your hunting spots to aid in my 'research' :tongue3: :laughing9:

Well done there

P.S. - Maybe you can drop them off at the local archeologists office or police station. Tell them you feel bad & don't wanna step on their toes in terms of finds. Then make sure to tell'em they might still be live. ROTFLMAO :laughing7:

Another outstanding post AC. :hello2:
I agree with Rob. You're going to need a bigger house.
Congrats,
MM

I don't know what to say! I do know that the first thing I do when I come to this thread is look for your name because I know I am going to be impressed by what you have found.
If they ever start a metal detecting "Hall of Fame" you should be the number 1 inductee!
