I found this rock about six to eight inches deep in an old park by the river that is no longer used.
It was getting a really SOLID nickel reading about 8 inches down so it has high metal content and i dont know what it is.
Looks like coal or something but im not too sure, its burnt like slag on one side but its pretty heavy for its size, unlike coal slag which is usually really porous and light.
The little piece is solid metallic sparkles kind of like the texture of fools gold but its pretty soft. its actually so sparkly my camera had a real hard time focusing on it. found em in the same hole more than likely broke off the bigger rock.
the big one leaves black dust with decent sized metallic looking flakes on your hands when you handle it. Its also very dense i can tell by how heavy it is but the inside is fairly soft on a scale of 1-10 one being softest i would have to rate it at 5.5 - 6 or so.
The outside crust is more of a 7-7.5
Im sure it isnt valuable but my curiosity gets the best of me.
What is it, if its a bi-product of some sort then whats it from?
Im guessing some kind of coal slag or something the town i live in (pekin) is an old coal mining town.

How far are you from Carbondale? Those rock dr.'s should be able to tell you if you can't get an answer here. Cool find.

It looks like material which comes from a bubble in a rock, that geodes come out of. I have found them still inside the rock with geode imprints inside the iron like cast.

Mine are carved to resemble hogge and ships, my jeweler says obsidian used as ballast in ancient pirate sloops? He broke with a hammer to show me..my experience with obsidian as a child was the black glass arrowheads i collected in the wilderness of my Island. Some are very heavy and have gold flecks under the loope too! See silver colored nuggets they say are melted beer cans? Are the rings aluminum too? 925 and IC K on inside of thems? I think old Bermuda came here to Massachusetts and am certified as "intact". Sommer Islands was Bermuda where Kidd hid. HH Boris see all my posts for 2012 under "what is it" Does a three pence new variety sound valuable? check the red book under SI tokens, also found some NE silver that is at the Safe Box in Bank of America. Wish I could turn it in to a museum or cash but don't need more taxes yet. PS love the President.
