I just finished another year guiding pheasant hunts in Presho, S.D.
Presho was the hay capitol of the world in the 20's with a population of over 6,000 people, today the town is less than 500 people and most of the ground is farmed by a handful of farmers. The hunting lodge is on Main St. and was once the bank built when the R.R. came to town in 1905. My boss/outfitter owned several lots in town including the old drug store lot across the street. I started swinging there and picked up a dime a couple hours in. I brought it to my boss and handed him the dirty coin to clean off, he handed the dirt clump back to me and claimed the coin looks new. I took the coin over to the window and cleaned it off...Holy Smokes! My first mercury dime! 1927! He checked the next dime I found that afternoon... Merc 45! Two silvers in one day!
I found a metal aspirin Stamp in the next day out along with a Catholic miraculous medal. My best find on the lot was a Presho, Sd good for token! Globe land & loan Co. "Good for a carfare when you buy your land with us". Flip side said "This token will make save you money", "Lyman County land will make you money"!
I found a Accepted/Rejected token from the national assoc. for epilepsy featuring a boy on the accepted side holding a baseball bat and the flip side rejected boy with his head down. I also found the cast iron cap gun!
My folks bought a 160 acre piece of property that was planted with crp grass and juniper tree rows and I always knew there was a post office on the property, while hunting it one day I noticed a fox hole and the dirt that was thrown from the hole had porcelain and glass in it. I went back the next day I could and brought the MD. I found three glass bottles in the vicinity and started working the few areas the grass was strampled down. I found what I think could be a post office box pull with a decorative rope design around it. I came back in the next time and found my oldest coin so far!!! 1885 indian head! The trees were planted in a row with a tarp to contain the weeds and the coin was right under the tarp! Here is some pics from my trip...thanks for lookin'.

Congrats on your finds and your occupation. I'm jealous. I visit your state 2-3 weeks a year pheasant hunting. I detect every day before hunting. My oldest coin ever was a 1854 seated dime found in SD. I detect a lot of old homes and schools.
I took every opportunity to detect as well, coming from Wa. State I dreamed of the potential of a once bustling town. I hunted As a client for 8 years with the outfitter before he offered me the job last year (or more offered my dog the job) lol
I used to hunt for two weeks then go home, this year was the first time I have md' out of state...certainly not the last!

Sounds good Highnam - I'll put you in my archives and look you up when we head out that way, I would love for your Lab to give my Lab a hunting lesson. He does good for the fist half hour, than he likes to walk behind me :BangHead:. I guess he wants to put up the birds that are holding tight behind us!!!!
My dog does really well working with other dogs. Had all the trainees running with him this year, the only time he walked behind me this year is when we pulled up to our field and I pulled out my MD! He wagged his tail tho, he needed the rest.

My guess is he's just out of shape. Labs are generally stocky dogs, and a little preseason conditioning goes a long way.

I have a 40 lb.German Short haired Pointer, and a 90 lb. Lab. The Short Hair is always ready for 4 hrs all out, but if I don't run the Lab before season, she's lickin' boots after a half hour. GL.

Nice finds, nice lab, I have a 13 yr old mix, mother was a golden retriever, father, brown lab. There is a pic of him on my visitors page/profile page

Highnam, I hunt fairly close to you. I am in between Kimball and Miller. I just retired 2 weeks ago. If your interested in detecting before the hunt I would gladly drive up to your location.

How fun is that! Every season I clean out the deep freeze and found a cleaned sealed pheasant in the bottom. I had to chunk it and was bummed. The two bucks fit nicely though. Nice digs.
