Got out yesterday at a short beach that took a big hit from Super Storm Sandy back in October.....We had a pretty strong Noreaster a few days ago and it cut out a little more....The one block wide area looked low when I initially spotted it with my binoculars from 4 blocks away.....I'm so glad that I made the effort to read that beach before I just blindly wandered out to start swinging !!

18k.gif VERY NICE 100ck.gif

Sometimes it's amazing what a difference just a few inches of sand can make. I think learning to read a beach is the most critical part of beach hunting. Not much good to hunt over targets you can't access. :icon_thumleft:

Awesome finds Brian! This is what it's all about!

I hope the beach newbies are paying attention...that is Priceless info there!

Congrats on those two fatty gold rings!:hello2:

Boom Baby! I just had to say it. Thanks for the video and information. Another great video with some helpful learning stuff.

Went out this morning and found 5 quarters and just 2 pennies. Worked the towel line and the high tide line, surf is really high lately and just found the quarters. Now I know why I found the quarters in the packed sand and what I gotta go do on the low tide - get my ass back out there.

Wow...two chunks...congrats.

Surfdigger, I would love to view your video, but I don't have the necessary component to do so.

I'm not sure if I would have to purchase the Adobe Flash player; I had just downloaded an updated one.

Anyway, I'm sorry that I cannot view this video.

Thanks for the still photos accompanying the video; the rings are beautiful...they look like matching bands?

Thanks for the info, Surfdigger, I finally figured it all out...I can now view all videos:hello2:

Loved that video...great detecting advice is always welcomed!

I like the excitement in your voice and all the helpful hints you give. The gulf needs a major storm before we have sand movement like you get.

Way to bring home the Gold!!!! Those are two good looking rings!!!!

Nice to see a Jersey guy get something other than a big pile of clad!!!!

Surf digger:
When trying to find the coin line on a long/short narrow beach with no discernible features:
1) is it best to go slow and overlap your DD coil 25% while you work a shallow W pattern between the High Tide and Low Tide marks till you recover the first old quarter/lead sinker and then spiral out.
2) Or is it better to go faster with no overlap and work a shallower S pattern between on firm wet sand between High and Low Tide marks till you recover the first old quarter/lead sinker and then spiral out.
Also, when do you switch to a grid pattern. I am usually either into the water or up on dry sand by the third spiral as the beach is narrow - truncating this expanding search pattern.
3) As you will most likely sweep over the same area (if you cannot find a coin line) when you return, is it better to search as fast you can walk zig zagging on the firm sand between the High and Low Tide marks and not worry about coil overlap till you get signal(s) or your threshold nulls on an Xcal.

If I'm on a beach with no discernible signs of low spots or cuts, I will work a loose W pattern from the high tide line down to the waters edge as far as overlapping until I find a heavy target or a concentration of targets I work a little faster, not slow not fast you have to find something in between I don't worry too much about overlap that is until I get into a patch or a section of beach holding multiple targets.... When that happens then I change the game completelywhen that happens then I change the game completely and that is when I will spiral out from a heavy target such as a quarter a nickel or a fishing sinker.... working the spiral pattern forces me to slow down and overlap my sweeps.... If the spiral produces especially heavy targets, then I will do a very tight W pattern going slow and overlapping my Sweeps..... I will do this until the targets start to peter out, and then that'zs when I grid that area..... If I'm digging a lot of deep targets, then I might even work that patch diagonally looking for the real deep gold that undoubtedly is hiding out deep in the sand strata.... I hope this answers your questions SGC.
