It's been a couple of weeks since we moved our son to Reno so he can attend UNR. Of course that meant my swinging time has been much less of of late since he has been gone but he decided to come home over the three day weekend. This of course meant I had my hunting partner for a couple of days and off we went. (mom had to work....)
We spent a couple of days hunting in the evening when it cools off at our old depot site. (Photo attached) The larger depot was built in 1892 and burned around 1906. It has been getting more and more harder to dig with all the foundation rocks we have run into. The neat thing though and the amount of coins we have been able to save that have fallen in between those rocks!!!!
Day 1, Wyatt had about a two foot hole going and of course he is first on the board telling me he has silver in the hole. Its the size of a dime and were both thinking it is a Barber or Seated.......he sits in disgust and looks at this silver disc and said, "S&%T!" Its a Merc. Trying not to laugh since he dug down a lot and I could hear the DEUS pitch when he swung over his pile of dirt; I said at least its silver and not another wheat. Ended up being 1917-S.
About an hour later I get a decent 1887-S Dime about a foot deep along with a nice bottle. We move to the other side of where we think the Depot sat and Wyatt got a nice 1900 V Nickel just before I sniped an 1898-S Barber Half after moving away some larger rocks. Of course moving these rocks took its toll on some of our equipment.
Day 2, Wyatt again starts off first digging what appeared to be in a trashy area which contained some burned bottles and large pieces of metal. His pulled out a darker colored coin which we both thought was a token. A few rubs and an overnight soaking we were able to see , a worn 1864 two cent piece. I think I was more excited than Wyatt was. It still has some of that nasty green stuff on it so I will soak it more for him. This is only the second one to come out of our ghost town and of course, I am still waiting to find one.
We both ended up with appear to be NCO (Nevada-California-Oregon Rail Road) Hat Badges which were also found in the deeper sections we had dug out. I used some brasso on mine which is pictured. I was able to take my time and really tried to listen to the slightest signals and found another Barber Half. This one being an 1905-S. Having only two other Barber Halves from the past 16 years, I was more than ecstatic to have doubled my inventory in a couple of days. Wyatt has ended up with most of the coins from this spot so far including a couple V-Nickels, lots of Wheats and Indians along with another nice 1914-S Barber Dime.
Well, it was a great couple of days we had together and now he has just left heading back to Reno for school. He has already spoken to some of the map keepers in the UNR library and is starting a list for possible sites around Northern Nevada. What is funny; Wyatt was able to get permission to metal detect on campus which has some really-really old areas; but the sad part is they said "no digging" I have no doubt he will figure something out........
Anyway, hope everyone enjoys the rest of summer and keep posting your great finds!!!! Mike
