Valuable Gift Left In Alexandria Kettle


ALEXANDRIA, La. -- It's not unusual for people to drop coins in a Salvation Army red kettle to help those in need, but some coins are worth a lot more than others.

On Friday morning, when Alexandria Salvation Army officials were going through Thursday's kettle donations, they discovered a gold coin worth about $1,600 and another gold coin believed to be valued at about $400.

Salvation Army Maj. Ken Nelson tells The Town Talk he believes the gold-coin donations were inspired by the recent bicycle thefts. Ten bikes that were to be given to needy children were stolen from a Salvation Army building last week, and the community responded by donating more than 130 bikes and more than $10,000.

Nice story and probably the person giving the gold knew the value.

However, as difficult as this may be to believe, there still are those who don't know the worth of certain valuable things. I personally have found treasures on ebay, yard sales, and other online sites, worth up to many 100's of times their selling price.

Years ago I heard of a lady in our city who sold her US $20 gold pieces for $25 each. I think that buyer should have gone to jail for ripping her off. A fellow art collector found a $8,000 painting by a famous artist on ebay for like $500. A guy bought a Native American pot not far from my house and he was on Antiques Roadshow with it. It was valued at about $6,000 as I recall. He paid like $5 for it.

I've done this myself. Years ago I had a rare Civil War era pocket watch and sold it at a garage sale for about $35. Later I heard the buyer got like $1,500 for it.
